What I didn't know about Jessi is, well, a lot. It's funny how even though I know Jessi to be a fun, lovely, and skillful card maker, I haven't had a true sense of who she is until I read this interview. That's what I love about this feature. I just love that we can all get to know one another a little better as the weeks pass by.
And so, without further ado, join me in getting to know onecraftymama a bit better. Take it away, Jessi!
Hi! I’m Jessi Fogan, and my blog is called One Crafty Mama.
Describe yourself in three short, fun sentences.
I am lucky enough to be a stay-at-home mother to two boys, Connor and Riley, who are on their way into the teen years. They both have autism, so I am a fierce advocate, translator, therapist, and teacher. With all that free time, I love to craft, read, watch TV dramas, and ZUMBA.
How long have you been paper crafting? How did you get involved in paper crafting? What is your favorite aspect of paper crafting?
Crafts have been a part of my life for nearly as long as I can remember - cross-stitch, crochet, collage, cards. I think becoming involved in paper crafting was a natural progression of my creativity. Previously I’d always worked from patterns because of the crafts I chose, but paper crafting (even with stamps and pre-printed papers) is much more of a personal expression. Between a husband, two kids, three cats, and a dog, space is at a premium in our house, so I have a corner carved out of our computer room that is lovingly referred to as my "crap corner." I love being able to incorporate different techniques and styles into my paper art, and how even five minutes at my desk can brighten my whole day.
What do you like most about the Moxie Fab World? What is your favorite feature and why?Do you have a favorite all-time post? If so, list the URL and tell why you like it so much.
Like everyone else, I have a hard time picking "just one" – the Tuesday Trigger just narrowly edges out the others because by playing along and checking out how others are inspired, I’ve been able to stretch my own creativity in countless ways. Quite possibly my favourite Trigger was Simple Elegance as I think it helped push me into a new comfort level, including white space and quilling freehand.
We are all moxie fab in our own way. Name one thing that makes you moxie fab.
I’m freaking hilarious.
How would you describe your style? Provide 3-4 images of a paper crafted project that illustrates that style best.
My style is really quite eclectic. I love the look of clean and simple cards, and I love the fussiness and detail of quilling. I’m also a patterned paper addict! I love sewing (on paper only!) and often sew buttons or crochet details on cards.
Who is your favorite manufacturer and why? What is your favorite all-time collection and why? Have you created a paper crafted project using this collection? If so, feel free to attach it.
Picking a single manufacturer? Yikes. BasicGrey and My Mind’s Eye are both companies whose paper lines inspire me. A rather new one to me is Simple Stories. I picked up the Summer Fresh collection earlier this year, and am intent on using every single scrap. I just adore it!
My favourite creation using this collection (and there have been dozens!) is an anniversary card that I made for my friend Lindsay to give to her husband. Lindsay has her own business, uncannypreserves.com, and how perfect is this?
What is your favorite column in Paper Crafts magazine and why?
I love Stamp It! Techniques – often these feature some awesome products that I’ve yet to try, or am not yet confident playing with. Seeing what the different designers have created can often sway me one way or the other when it comes to deciding whether or not to spend my limited craft dollars on a new type of product.
Do you consider yourself to be a trend-watcher? Why or why not? Do you feel that trend-watching is important to your creativity? Why or why not?
This question for me is related to my previous answer. I definitely consider myself a trend-watcher, but not necessarily a follower. I often feel like I’m the last one to hop on a bandwagon – which is not to say my crafty wishlist isn’t a mile long! I try to wait before diving in and purchasing trendy items, and first see what I might have in my own stash to recreate them. In that sense, trend-watching is very important to my creativity, because if a trend appeals to me, it pushes me to recreate it from supplies I already have on hand.

The word that comes to my mind first when I think of Jessi is versatile. She enjoys trying a lot of different styles and techniques and she is very confident in their execution. And I just love her view of trend-watching as well. My favorite line? I definitely consider myself a trend-watcher, but not necessarily a follower. Because isn't that what this whole trend-watching thing is all about, friends? Being aware of trends so you can decide which ones appeal and which ones don't appeal? It's the way to keep our paper crafted designs fresh and yet still claim them to be our own.
I'd like to thank Jessi for taking the time and trouble to work up the answers to my questions today, and to express my gratitude for hanging out in the Moxie Fab World as much as she does. She's definitely a bright spot in this little world of ours, and I'm so glad that I got the chance to get to know her better today.
Be sure and leave Jessi some love before you go friends!
Moxie Fabbers ROCK,
