Five (x4) for Friday: 50 Shades of Gray

No, not those 50 Shades of Grey. I'm talkin' 50 shades of chalkboard gray.

With the chalkboard trend having been strong for over a year now (Go-to Gal Betsy Veldman did a Moxie Talk on it way back in April of 2011), it seems only natural that the shade and its many variations would become trendy in other aspects of living as well. I've been seeing it everywhere: as the backdrop for artsy photo shoots, in the Natural Elements feature of the September/October issue of Paper Crafts magazine, and on the walls of homes all over the World Wide Web as folks mix their own chalkboard paint to add a personal, creative touch to their daily living. Throw in the title of what I understand is a racey little book written with women's desires in mind, and my quest became clear--find 50 inspiring items in all shades of gray. Check it:

And that's just the first 20! Click HERE to see the complete set that rounds it out to a nifty 50.

(And for another 50 inspiring images that show my favorite color to pair with gray, click HERE.)

Which is your favie? Have you been inspired by the chalkboard trend? Why or why not? Leave me a comment that answers any and/or all of these questions by midnight EDT on Sunday, September 9 and I'll draw one random lucky to win something yummy from my moxie magical prize drawer!

More like 50 shades of moxie fab inspiration,

~Cath

PS Are you working on your Card Design Handbook Week challenge entries? Just giving you the head's up that I'll be introducing yet another challenge next week, so you may want to get started on those so you can have some fun with the next trendy challenge right here in the Moxie Fab World.

Inspired? Yes. Today's goal is a card with grey chevron. I cannot get enough grey and it is not easy to find crafting supplies in a nice light or medium grey. Go figure.

I'm loving gray everything!!! Just helped my daughter redecorate her bathroom and bedroom. Lots of gray and white!

Hmmmm...what's my favorite? I guess I love the chalkboard map with all of the fancy fonts. I've been inspired to try, but so far have not been successful, a gray tone card.

I have definitely incorporated more gray in my paper crafting - not so much in home decor. I love gray and white, or gray paired with one other color.

I like the grey Shawl and I love this color on my clothes. I always combine grey with yellow accessories!

I haven't paper-crafted with grey but I really like chalkboard paintedwooden tags to label my son's toy bins, to cover an old sheet of metal, frame it, put it in the kitchen as a memoboard, etc. And that grey ballgown... Stunning!!

Maryann said...

WOUW so many great ideas here, but my fave must be the tapestry headbord for that bed. It just looks absolutely amazing. I would love to own a bed like this one, and saved the pic, so I maybe can try and make something like it sometime.
Thanks so much for lots of great inspiration here and have a wonderful week-end everyone.

Thank you for all the fabulous inspiration photos! Loved the yellow and gray cake with chevrons!! Yellow and pink are my favorite colors to pair with gray.

Debstamps said...

Oh I love the gray shawl you found Cath! I AM inspired by grey...my house colors are grey and butter to match hues in our hickory floors. It's such a nice foil for other colors. And, I've been wanting to make a black cs card as a chalkboard for ages now...just might have to do it with this Moxie inspiration!

Love them all! Yes, I love the chalkboard look...I have yet to try it, but I have the DCWV chalkboard stack, so it's on my to-do list :)

I love grey but don't use it much in my card making. Your samples make me feel like I've been missing out.
I had a bedroom that was painted charcoal. It was great. Wish I still had it. The chalkboard look is new to me but I think it would be a good look.

Barbara said...

The swinging leaves and the chalkboard headboard and the map of the USA really caught my eye on the first glance through! I haven't tried this idea yet, but am thinking on it!!!!!

Miriam Prantner said...

I love a good charcoal gray, but it's hard to find a good gray that suits me. I find they are often way too light, and that it's really hard to photograph the darker grays without them looking too black.

Karen and Kyle said...

I love the zigzag settee from Target. I didn't even know there was a chalkboard trend...see how trendy I am? :) I didn't like the grey thing at first, but it has grown on me. I love it with a bit of yellow and some peacock blue! Chalkboards are stressful to me. The dust on my fingers is disturbing and scratching nails. Aagh!

Peg said...

I love the tapestry headboard. That is gorgeous. I have been inspired with the chalkboard look. Our kitchen is black and orange and recently I finished painting a couple of half walls black in it and thought about using chalkboard paint. I ended up painting with a flat black, but it still looks awesome!

Jacquie Southas said...

Wow - your Pinterest boards are awesome! Love the gray pendant, the chevrons and the tufted sofa from Anthropologie - so much inspiration!

Casey said...

Oh my goodness! I love all the Gray!!! It is my new black! I have definitely been using it more since the chalkboard trend! And it looks fabulous with yellow which i have been using more as well! My favorite is the gray zigzag setee from Target! I am also really into chevrons right now!! Thanks for the chance!!

Hmmmm, for me the chalkboard trend is fine in small doses. As for gray, that is not a favorite of mine either, but I do like it with yellow or pink. I did like the shawl, dress from ModCloth and the sofa from Target!

I haven't decorated with any grey in my home yet. But I have purchased grey and yellow papers from Cosmo Cricket. Love that combo. And a bought a set of Spectrum Noir packet of markers in 112 shades of grey.

Well, I have to be honest, I have to say it, in writing, tried to use grey in a project... just.could.not.get.it.to.work. So I have decided grey is not for me. ever. But did you know you can mist and color over grey? Thus, I transform grey. Now if I can only stop getting grey hair.....

Tammy said...

OMGosh the Tapestry Headboard is beautiful! I love grey and is such a great compliment to the aqua and orange I use on my papercrafts.

I just made a white embossed flower on black cardstock and colored it with the distress marker picket fence. It looks like a chalkboard picture. Love all you shades of grey, Cath, but my fav is the grey venezia dress. Oh, just imagine: sitting in a gondola, wearing a dress like that while the gondoliere sings...Moxie Fab!

I have totally taken on the chalkboard trend. We actually painted one wall in my son's room with chalkboard paint. He loves it and he can draw on the wall without Mommy fainting! It is also fun when friends come and a sibling runs downstairs screaming "so-so is writing on the wall".

Cynthia B. said...

Love these pics! I especially like the chevron settee and the US wall map, as well as the cute ModCloth dress. I took a look at your Pinterest board too - the gray walls and cabinets are very cool! I think I need to go shopping for a gray dress and think about painting a wall or something. :)

I've always thought that gray is the perfect color to make all other colors stand out, but as it turns out, it can be pretty good looking on it's own as well. I should give it a try.

I do love grey. I was looking at your grey pinterest board yesterday, and I was thinking of your yellow & grey board this morning when I dressed my toddler in grey tailored shorts and a yellow top :-) I find it quite feminine when teamed with white, like the fabric magnetic board, Tapestry Headboard, ZigZag Armless Settee, and Swinging Leaves Backdrop.

The last image is my favorite I think, I'm a sucker for romance! Grey is such a fabulous neutral. I own a lot of grey clothes too, it's slimming and very chic I think. I agree with a lot of my crafty friends here, it's tough to find really good grey to work with and not become overwhelmed by any drabness, it definitely needs blacks and whites to go with it...and some aqua, yummy!

Michelle /Eliotstamps said...

I've been loving gray lately, too! You have a great collection of inspiring images here, Cath, but I think my favorites are the chevron settee from Target and the chalkboard map of the states. So fab!
