Inspiring Spaces: What's Your Style?

Space: the unlimited or incalculably great three-dimensional realm or expanse in which all material objects are located and all events occur.

It is an understatement to say that space is a very big thing. As in, it is a mind boggling, colossally large, beguiling and baffling chasm of everything.

And yet, it defines us. We chop it up into practical pieces. Countries, states, cities, towns, recreational areas, shopping districts, neighborhoods, homes, rooms, favorite nooks, cupboard, table, A2-sized pieces of folded cardstock.

And none of these space-dividers are the same. America is different from Canada is different from China is different from Antarctica.

New York is different from Phoenix is different from Paris is different from Buenos Aires.

One mall is different from another while this canyon is more rocky than that one, while a gambrel is not a saltbox is not a colonial is not a split level is not a pueblo is not a cave.

And so on.

I guess you could say I've been thinking about space a lot lately, friends. How we use it. How we adorn it. The moods we wish to create in it. What is practical. What is necessary. What is just this side of ridiculous.

And I am amazed by all the different types of spaces there are in the world. That your house is completely different from my house might have some things in common with her house, and oh my I never ever thought of doing that to a house whatsoever.

Which is--I know I keep coming back to this theme--the whole exact very reason that this really is a moxie fab world.

Point of fact: I spend my life in the realm of inspiration and doing my best to inspire others and I am constantly blown away by how inspiring the world really is.

So today, I've got some inspiring-to-me spaces for you.

I know, right?

I've got some questions for you:

Which space appeals to you most?
Which is most like the spaces you have created where you live?
Which is most different?
Which space is most like the cards you create?
Which space is most like the cards you would like to create?
Which space is most like me?

...and why?

If there isn't a representation of your particular style, I hope you can make do. I can't wait to see the discussion develop, friends--so discuss!

All spaced out,

~Cath

PS Which space is most like the space I have created where I live? The Craftsman Farmhouse. Here is a picture of my dining room:

And my living room:

The one that appeals to me the most is the cozy cabin, because it feels warm... The one that looks the more like my places is the all-white living room, because I much prefer having white walls and be able to put whatever decoration I wish rather than having colored walls... But my furniture is colored and I have a wooden floor so it also looks a bit like Jacques Saint Dizier Craftsman Farmhouse...

Which space appeals to you most? Porch Guest Room from Country Living. It looks bright, airy and comfortable. I like the candles and books there too, it just looks like a relaxing place.

Which is most like the spaces you have created where you live? Sam Kasten Home from Architectural Digest.

Which is most different? All-White Living Room from Country Living. I love this room and think it looks gorgeous but it wouldn't be practical for me with the kids and a dog.

Which space is most like the cards you create? A bit of everything really but if I had to pick one photo - Sam Kasten Home from Architectural Digest

Which space is most like the cards you would like to create? Any and all - I like a bit of variety.

Which space is most like me? Sam Kasten Home from Architectural Digest

Your personal spaces are beautiful. I have to say all of the images from Country Living were my favorites. I could tell before I read the caption they were my style.

I love your spaces Cath! I also like the porch in the pics you posted. It's such a cozy place to have a cool drink on a summer day. We have a 60 year old house with solid oak floors in all rooms, so my style is derived from Country Living mags. My walls are the new caramel colour, my sofa and chair are blue and cream very tiny stripes, and there is a wool patterned area carpet. One wall has a fireplace with long mantel and built-in bookshelves on the left side. My kitchen is oak with olive greygreen walls and tumbled tile countertop and backsplash. We have lived there 27 years so the house is a work in progress.
My stamping style tends to be vintage and I find it hard to do cards with lots of white or open space.

I never thought about how my choice in home decor might match my card making style....but this was a real eye-opener. My home definitely most closely resembles the rooms from Country Living....and now that I think about it, so do my cards. I tend to put that cozy, comfy, homey, bright and cheery vibe into my papercrafting. Who knew????

I love that Sam Kasten home with the huge shelving unit and the beautiful wood shelves and furniture, so cozy looking! That kitchen of pale yellows and blues is equally awesome...so bright and light and cheery, my idea of a perfect place to make a meal!

I love the warmth of a Craftsman style home. It's a very inviting look. Unfortunately, our style right now is "this is the only thing we could afford"

Oh the Bedroom from Country Living (Bedroom Full of Flowers) is the space that appeals to me most- pretty, soft and feminine. The current space I use is compact, clean and organized; a very good system so far, but I would love to have it become a little more 'pretty and feminine' like the picture I chose.

I would have said the sunny yellow bedroom for you!
I would feel most at home in the country kitchen, warm and soft, but am drawn to the modern graphic bedroom, a quandry of styles!

Adore your spaces! Gorgeous :)

I love the first one, the cheery kitchen :) It reminds me of my kitchen a little bit - the lovely blue is similar to my walls, and I have a butter yelow chippy cresser that serves as storage...

I also love the Sam Kasten room. It reminds me of my craft room with all the shelves, with goodies in every nook and cranny.

so jealous! arts and crafts style is my very favorite! it is warm--both in the use of wood and its autumn colors--and is simply welcoming in its style. a more attainable second place goes to 'country' style. my card-making style, however, is more modern--lots of white space...go figure. beautiful pictures, both of others' homes and yours! thanks ~k

Which space appeals to you most? Two of them, both by Country Living - The Cheery Kitchen and The Floral Bedroom

Which is most like the spaces you have created where you live? Hmmm, hard one, but probably the Cheery Kitchen

Which is most different? The yacht

Which space is most like the cards you create? Probably the Floral Bedroom - I love me some flowers!

Which space is most like the cards you would like to create? Ditto - I love me some flowers!

Which space is most like me? I think the bottom one, (Hardy Holzman Pfeifer Home from Architectural Digest) the one with all the clean lines, but cheery bright colors

...and why? Because I love your humor and cheerful attitude, and your eye for style is 'straight on'!

I love the pink and black apartment room, because it's fun and cute and kinda like the cards I make.

But my house is more like the paneled room...although it's a ranch and not a craftsman home...I use a lot of wood.

The white room is beautiful, but I couldn't actually live there--too pristine! :)

The bedroom full of flowers from Country Living most represents my living space. My guest bedroom and bath have wicker furniture green walls and flower print bedspread of blues, greens & mauve colors.
The Chic & Modern from Apartment Therapy most resembles the cards I make in my mind :o)

lovely selection of spaces!
I find Betsy Johnson's most appealing & I'd love to create in that atmosphere. My house is most like the guest porch, mainly because of the colors. I also like the all white room, but that would never work in my house of 3 little dogs :)

faThe Craftmans Farmhouse Dining room is by far my favorite :)

What wonderful questions! The Cheery kitchen is the room that appeals to me the mos, because it has lots of light, windows, and color on the wall. The space has ordered clutter, but is not totally void of things. This is also most like space I have created. I have lived in so many places and collected from the places I have been that it gets difficult to arrange so that it does not look cluttered. The space that is most different is the Manhattan Loft. It has combined very modern looks with elegance in the lighting and table arrangement, definitely not me. I do not combine. My cards seem to be more like the bedroom of flowers. But, as in this bedroom there seems to be something lacking and a hodge podge of stuff. As for what I would like my cards to be, I am ever evolving. Some of my cards are wonderful and others are OK, so I guess I would like consistency in what I do. However, I do not gauge the quality of my cards based on others opinions alone. I generally know when I photograph my card whether it is what I was hoping to achieve, however that does not mean it is a winner! It just means I am satisfied enough to go on to the next card.

I am not sure it is most like mine, but I love the Bedroom full of flowers from Country Living. I love the soft but cheery colors and the clean look of it all.

Hi Cath, you have a lovely dinning room and livling room.
The Cheery Kitchen from Country Living I like the most. Because it's sunny, warm and spacious. It makes want to cook there. Some others that are too white make me think of high maintenace, I'd rather spend time stamping and not trying to keep everything clean and white!! :D

The one that appeals to me the most is the primitive hearth-side room. Growing up without a stable home - I gravitate to rooms that have a sense of permanence to them.

I'm drooling over all the pix. Somehow the first one spoke to me immediately. All through the lineup I was thinking I'd love to see your house. Hey! Thanks for sharing. Wish I could dream up one of your moxiefab words to describe how much I love your house. You're a pro fersure.

I clearly need to subscribe to Country Living- those are THE most appealing to me!! I'd love my house and cards to resemble those images!
The modern rooms are not me at all. I do appreciate their beauty, and even strive for their look on occasion with my cardmaking, but not for my living space!!!!
LOVE your rooms! :)

i like the sam kasten one the best i think...appeals to me the most! Since I create different styles all the time, i can see a little bit of all of them in my work!

The cheery kitchen inspires me the most, but I don't see a picture that is most like the style of my house. We are probably traditional, mininalists, with a little bit of cozy thrown in. We've had our home described as comfortable and cozy, which is just fine with me. :)

Cynthia B. said...

I love the Sam Kasten home - all that shelving! *sigh*
From all the pics, that one and the Cheery kitchen are the closest style to my home...only a lot neater! To me, they're the most cozy and comfortable, inviting spaces, and that's what I like my own home to be like.
I think Modern is the most different from my home.
Thanks for sharing your personal spaces, Cath. They look very inviting places too!

As for the cards I make, I think the Hardy Holzman home is most like mine. I like to use bright, cheery colors. I always try to change up cards for different people, though, so all of these photos would inspire my crafting. :)

I like the porch guest room and the cozy cabin. I'm not much into lots of decor and fancy lifestyle. I prefer comfortable and cozy.

That's your house? Seriously? I thought it was a magazine shot! Gorgeous! Well, it's probably not a surprise to you, but I love the country living meets white meets a few touches of shabby chic every now and then. :-) Of course my new apartment looks like land lord left overs meet Traveling Tribe... not the prettiest thing in the world, but we have hope that eventually all our things will come!

I love the Porch Guest Room - Country Living! I love golden yellow so the cheery kitchen would most reflect our home. To me, Betsy Johnson's Manhattan Loft is the most different. The cozy cabin is definitely most like the cards I create - full of warmth and love! I am going to go with cozy cabin again on the cards I would like to create because I love that down home country thing! I think the cheery kitchen is most like you because you are always so upbeat and positive!

I am drawn to the porch guest room..and if it overlooked a lake I would be in heaven. Currently I have a small back porch that has a lake view from a distance. My house is more like the chic and modern. My cards are more like the Pfiefer house. And I don't know what would represent the card I would like to make.

I like the Bedroom Full of Flowers. I would really like to sleep there, but, more importantly, I would love to wake up in that sunny, cheerful room!

This one's easy...the Betsy Johnson loft is sooo me. It resembles my house in NO WAY WHATSOEVER, but it is my style and incorporates everything I love. My house is more of a wabi-sabi, eclectic Pottery Barn-ish feel...only with dog slobber and kid clutter. :)

Rebecca Ednie said...

My fave is the Betsy Johson's Manhatten loft if the chairs were a different colour. My other fave is the floral bedroom. The colours are gorgeous!

Ginger Claire said...

Oh my that Betsy Johnson loft is to die for. Being from England where our houses are a lot smaller, there's not much like my house although the Jacques Saint Dizier Craftsman Farmhouse reminds me of one of my favourite pub/restaurants. I'm loving that your house looks like this and thank you a peek into your world xxx

I absolutely LOVE the Cheery kitchen from Country Living. I can definitively picture myself in that kitchen!!! I love how bright and, well, cheery it is! For the other parts of the home, I am drawn to cozy log cabins and French Country styles (so similar!) because I love earthy, organic looks. My cards are as eclectic as my home, as I dabble in all card styles from shabby chic to clean and simple, from linear to grunge. Depends on my mood and who I am making the card for!

I could quite happily live in any one of these rooms. The key to a great environment is good design.

I think I would like a nice cottage with all the necessary shabby chic and vintage elements to live in ...and an apartment in a great city designed in a contemporary but retro style.

Most of all I would just like somewhere clean and tidy and warm ...unlike my own home!
