Hello Moxie Fab friends! I’m excited to be here with you for another edition of Moxie Talk. If you know me, you know I love vintage things…and most of the time my projects have lots of layers and details. And maybe that’s why a little trend that I’ve seen popping up lately has really caught my eye. I’m seeing it in home décor, stationery, and our beloved paper crafting products. It’s a little thing I like to call “Botanical Collage." And it’s so pretty.
So what’s it all about? Well, I’ve notice that there are lots of things to love about this look. It takes many of my favorite elements and tosses them all into one big beautiful mess...
- Text print backgrounds…with maybe some ledger prints or music prints thrown in for good measure.
- Beautiful florals…often times they are very realistic and colorful.
- Greenery…leaves, ferns, stems, you name it!
- A gorgeous mix of colors.
- Some winged creatures…whether they’re birds, bees, dragonflies, or butterflies.
So let’s see how we can use this trend to inspire our paper crafting, shall we friends?
For my first project, I kept it simple. One of the characteristics of this trend is layers. BUT, even if you’re not the type to pile layer after layer onto your creations, you can still be inspired by this look!
Here I took some of the basic elements I talked about…I stamped a simple text background, then I stamped over it with a pretty fern and dragonfly image. Viola! You have a very simple one-layer card that still gives a nod to the botanical look.

For my next project, I let it fly…threw simple out the window and created a card that truly embodies this look. I started by layering lots of different patterns and prints for my background…text prints, florals, and ledger prints.

Over that I layered stamped images, a butterfly sticker from the new BasicGrey Curio collection, and a floral transparency from Fancy Pants.

All that layering was definitely fun and I’m going to have to try it again!
So what do you think? Two totally different cards, yet inspired by the same trend. I’d love to know…would you be more apt to simplify the look, like my first card? Or are you one that says “bring on the layers, baby!”? Leave me a comment by midnight MDT on Sunday, August 29 and Cath will choose one random winner to receive the Collage Friend Stamp from Hero Arts as shown above.
Basking in botanical bliss,
~Betsy

Ooh, I love this trend! I prefer the look of the second card but realistically I'd be more likely to make something like the first card. But I like them both!
I love your second one more....looks amazing...the layers add so much more dimension...
I especially loved the way that u have created a postal stamp with the butterfly stamp !
Gorgeous !!!
Tricky question- I am inclined to go simple but perhaps not quite as simple as your first card, somewhere in beween the two. i love these botanical cards and products- just beautiful!
While I love both cards, the second one is what I wish I could create, but the first would be much easier for me. If you could see the prints throughout my home, you'd know why I love this botanical trend in papercrafting.
Wow, both are gorgeous! I'm a CAS kind of girl, I LOVE the first one :)
I actually love the look of the layers but am much better at making the simpler version.
I love the look of the first card....such soft colors. Thanks for sharing!
Birds and flowers -what can get better than that! I love the layered look of cards -as well as the simple ones- I simply have a hard time creating clean simple ones!
This is my kind of trend! *lol* Lots of layers for me...=) More the better!! Just love vintage style.... *sigh*
I love the all but I like the simple version as it really highlights the main image...
Bring on the layers, baby! They're both beautiful...tfs!
I love the "botanical collage" look! Both of your cards are beautiful, but I would definitely tend to make something more like the second one with lots of layers and details.
Love that layered look, so I'd give it a try!

I found a vintage botanical book at a used book store in NY and have yet to cut into it ... looks like this may be the inspiration I need. I love that the second one feels more "collage-like".
So beautiful but then again anything Betsy touches is right! I would have to go w/making the card more simple just because I would be to nervous and think I'd mess it up! Love the inspiration.
Both cards are gorgeous in their own way! If you were sending me one (wow, wouldn't that be awesome), I'd choose the 2nd one!!!
I love to look at the layers, but end up making the simple more often than not.
I love the look of the second card, but in all honesty, it's the first one I would probably end up making. I need to challenge myself to try layers - you do such a beautiful job with them.
I'd keep it simple only because I'm bad at layers even though I adore that look.
I think I would be more apt to make your first simpler card, but I LOVE the layers!! Great work Betsy!!!
Bringon the layers baby!
Love this trend. Bring on the layers baby, love both cards.
Oh Besty, fab as usual!! I {heart} the second card ... just adore the layers upon layers and all the lovely embellies, soft papers and vintage stamping!
Your first card is so pretty in its simplicity, but WOW on the second card! The flowers are so eye catching! So, I guess I'm saying, "bring on the layers!!"
Wow the collections look amazing and the sample cards you did are FABULOUS! I would be more drawn to simple. That card you did is right up my alley!
Both cards are beautiful, but I think I'm more the layer type...
I would probably simplify the look. I love the first card.
I am a fan of the simple...So elegant :)
I know for sure I would make the simpler card...but they are both lovely!
Love both collages, especially the soft and simple one. But the layered one is wonderful, too! Great inspiration.
Layers, layers and more layers! Both cards are beautiful though.
I absolutely love the second card, but my natural tendency when making a card would be to create something closer to the first. Really love that pop of red on the second though!! :>
They are both gorgeous! I love layers...more is more, I say!
They are both gorgeous!! I think I like the layered card better, but maybe perhaps because it has more color. Great choices and inspiration!
The layering concept has always intimidated me, but this botanical collage idea excites me and I am going to give it a try! Thanks for the great idea Betsy.
I love the first card...so simple and so elegant!
Lots of interesting botanical goodies. I like your simple card the best.
I'm definitely simple. I love the first card.
I love the look of the 'simple' card, but I can never seem to make them look that fabulous...so, layers it is! lol
Gorgeous cards! I think I would be tempted to layer it on, just because the elements are all so beautiful!
both cards are awesome! I love the way the second one totally pops. Great trend, great stuff all very inspiring
Betsy, I love both cards, but count me in with the first one, simple.
I love this trend, gorgeous. Both cards are fab but I love the details and colors in the second one! So pretty!
I would love to see this as a challenge! Love the 2nd card.
LOVE this style!!!
I LOVE both cards. I don't really do simple, but you rocked the trend in just a few steps.
I'd probably end up with a card like the first. They're both absolutely wonderful, though!
Absolutely gorgeous cards - I love the botanical collage trend too. Thanks for the chance to win.
Oh they are both so beautiful! I love the second one because it is so Betsy! Perfect layers but never too much. Thanks for sharing your take on this trend with us!
Love the botanical images.
This trend speaks right to me as I'm sooo much an outdoors girl. I love layers but tend to keep them much more simple and organized with a bold but matching embellishment. I have a few ideas that I'd like to try that are outside of my box! Thanks for the pretty inspiration!
I'm more on the simple side.
I love both cards! If I am to create one, I'll probably go with the 1st card, though.
Oh Betsy, these are just stunning! I'd like to say "Bring on the layers, baby!", but I'd probably be better off attempting the simpler version. :)
Love the simplified look better, but that is my personal preference for clean and simple designs.
Bring on the layers, baby. I love the look!
love the layering on the second card...it made such a significant difference..
I love the second card. It is gorgeous with all the little detais.
Thanks.
These cards are lovely!! My favorite is the layered card with the stitching, but they are both wonderful and soft. Such great inspiration. Thanks for sharing!!
Oooooh! I've been eye-balling this stamp from Hero Arts since I first saw it!! I love both looks but think I'd stick to the first, more simple, look...at least till I'm comfortable with it. Then, I'd like to think I'd let go like you did, Betsy.
LOVE all that you do, Betsy! I LOVE layers, but can't do it like you do, the simple one would be more along my line ONLY for that reason! ;0)
I would simplify the card with just one layer or so. Don't get me wrong, I like the layered card better, but I tend to lean towards more simple cards.
hmmmm...love them both, but I kinda like the layers. I'm not sure I pull it off often, but I do like layers.
I love the layers and in fact, I am so inspired that is exactly what I am going to try next. Thanks so much!
I'd probably set out to make the more layered one and wind up with the first one. I'm just a simple and stunning kind of gal I guess! LOL!
I love them both!!
- April W
I LOVE to layer! The more the merrier! But I also like the clean look of the one layer card, so I would be like you....do both!
While they are BOTH beautiful in their own right, I'd be more inclined to go with the layers! I love some texture and dimension!
Betsy, these cards are so beautiful and inspiring! What a wonderful post!
Both cards are absolutely gorgeous but I do love layers! Loving the inspiration!
Betsy, both of your cards are absolutely gorgeous! I find CAS cards hard to make so I would probably be a "bring on the layers" kind of person! Thanks for all the inspiration!
I always say I'm going to keep things simple when I papercraft, but when I am finally done with my project...it's no where near simple! I do love both cards!
I'd be more likely to simplify, although I have to admit I like the layered card better. I just don't do very well with lots of layers myself ;)
I love it. I'd probably keep it simple but would love to try the layers.
Layers, layers, layers!!! That's what I like. It's more interesting.
Oh wow, that's a tough question. I love the simplicity of the first card, but I'm definitely drawn to the layers on the second. I love the pop of red on the second! And I'm completely in love with the vintage botanical trend - delicious!
Really beautiful cards.!Botanicals, birds and butterflies are my favorites!! Thanks for sharing your talent.
Both cards are fabulous and I love the layers that both reflect.
I also love th botanical theme, butterflies being my favourite, and together they provide a wealth of opportunities to create beautiful designs like yours. Thanks for showing us the way.
Luv Brenda xxx
i would probably end up somewhere in the middle. i tend to stay on the simple side but with one extra layer
Both beautiful cards. My favorite is the second one. I love the layers!
I must admit that multiple layering intimidates me. I am a simple kind of girl. LOL I love both of your cards and I have made both types of cards before, but definitely lean toward the clean and simple look more recently. Thanks for sharing them with us today. :D
I love to layer it on! thanks for the chance to win.
Chris Aiton
Both of your cards are beautiful! I, however, am more likely to go with the simple cards. Maybe I will have to give the layers a shot though!
I love the postage stamp on the second one but since my style is more CAS, I'd try to use it on something that would probably look closer to the first. Beautiful cards!!
I like both your cards but I would be more likely to make the simple version.
both cards are great - hard to decide but would have more fun doing the second one. i can see doing this on text from an old book - will have to give that a try.
bring on the layers!
thanks for the fun.
Ssndra
Love all that layering!!!
I honestly love both styles. It all depends on how its done. Simple can be very difficult to pull off, but layering can also be overdone. I guess I am somewhere in the middle!
These are both simply gorgeous! My style is clean and simple but I love (and greatly admire!), anyone who can pull off beautiful layers ... like this one! Love!!
I love this style. Birds & butterflies & text mixed up together. Yum. I love both your cards, but the second one is probably my favorite. Thanks.
Simplify - because sometimes less is more
Beautiful cards, love the second one. Thanks for sharing!
I love the second one...bring on the layers baby......i love everything you do Betsy, everything you touch seems to turn to magic!
Both cards are fabulous. They remind me of cards that I found in my grandma's cedar chest! Beautiful work as always
I would love to make the second, but realistically speaking, the first one would be the one I'd do. Both cards are beautiful!
I like the second card. Layering is harder than it looks and when done successfully, as in your card, it has a vintage feeling.

Bring on the layers!!!
Thanks for the chance ;)
Wow they are both fantastic but i love the layers :)
I love them both!!! I want to be great at all those layers, but I think I'm better at the simple....
wow....you can't go wrong either way...I am such a teeter totter...I luv both...I really can't pick one and I tend do do both styles in my stamping. They are both gorgeous, but I am luvin the second one tonight, because of those red flowers...heheeh...you can't go wrong with red either..can you tell I luv everything about this passion!
I love me some layers! I LoVE it!!
Your cards are stunning! I love the look of layers but I tend to use fewer layers on my cards.
I adore everything you do Betsy....in PaperCrafts - I am really drawn to your cards, that I have to look who made them and most of the time, they are yours! Love the stamp too!
I love the look of the layers but I think I'd try the simple look for starters!
Both of your cards are gorgeous, Betsy - this trend is just perfect for your style! I LOVE the simplicity of the first card for this look and it has a can-do feel for me :o)
I love the layered look best, it is really classy
ohhh lovely! thank you for the opportunity to win!
Both cards are beautiful! I'd probably be more inclined to make the second card, but unless I copied yours it would end up looking a little flat lol
This trend is definately my style! I love vintage, I love florals and I love butterflies and when you put them all together, there I am!!!!!
Another thing I love is layers, so I'm all about your second card but both are lovely!!!
xx
Hmmmmm, I think I'd do both of those--it all depends on my mood and the occasion. I'm game for either one! And I love what you did in both projects! :-)
I would lean towards simplifying but I think I would need to challenge myself on this one to layer it up. I love the effect of all of the layers. Your second card is my fave.
both beautiful cards but I must admit after seeing both of them the layered one is my favorite. I am a layering kind of gal!
I'm a layering kind of gal---love both though:) YOU ROCK! Thanks for the chance to win!
They're both fantastic cards but I LOVE your layers! I'd probably end up doing something closer to the first with a bit more layering, while wishing I could make it to the 2nd card. :)
Both cards are absolutely gorgeous, Betsy, but I am truly a layers kind of gal. The second one is definitely my fave!
Love the "bring it on" card with all the layers and interesting details to view! That's the one I'd shoot for making. I really like the simpler one as well. They're both awesome!
Betsy I have already left a comment but I thought you might like to see the fruits of inspiration.

Many thanks. Brenda xxx
Bring on the layers, baby is more my taste.
While I love layers, lately the CAS style is more of what my time allows. Both of your styles are extremely beautiful!
I love both- but personally the " more is the better"- so for me not this clean and simple- but layers and more layers
I typically don't like a ton of layers, but I really liked the second a lot better. I might actually try something similar. I also really loved the Basic Grey sticker, it was the first thing I was drawn to on the card. I think I'll try making a botanical inspired card in the near future and see how it turns out. :)
I love the look of the 2nd one, but realistically I would probobly make the 1st one far more often than the second because I don't feel confident to layer it up. I think it's because I wouldn't know where to stop--maybe after I made a few...who knows?
ommedina@comcast.net
I love the botanical trend. Both cards are great but I'd probably do the layered look. Thanks for the chance to win.
Love all the new botanical papers that are recently out! Your cards are wonderful.
Great cards. LOve the layers.
simple, simple! less says more to me! i have always LOVED 'botanical collage', but never knew what it was called. thanks for beautiful illustrations. ~k
I like the simple look better for a card. The layered I would do for a journal or sketch book.
My mom loves pictures with this in them. Every year at a craft show she stops and stares at them. Maybe I'll make the card for her.
I love this new trend! I have always loved vintage botanical prints. I prefer clean and simple, so I choose the first one! Just beautiful!
I'm more bring on the layers. I can handle the way you did the first one if I have toooo
These are just beautiful Betsy! Love it, love it, love it!!!
Both cards are beautiful, but I think I like the first card the most. It is simple, and the sentiment isn't as lost as it is n the seond card.
I love the way the color in the second card and all the intricacy you've made, but personally, I rarely have the patience to do loads o' layers. Thanks for pointing out this trend--the botanicals always catch my eye.
I follow your blog and love your work! The first card is great for a KISS challenge, but I prefer your second card. I just inherited two botanical bird prints, and I can't wait to start using similar prints when I make cards!
Both are great cards, Betsy! I'm more likely to make the first card. I'd love to be able to do all those layers of the second card, but I don't have the gift!
I love both of them but the layered one makes me clap my hands.I love this botanical theme too. It's so "nature loving". Thanks for a neat segment, Betsy.
I love the "botanical collage" look! I love the layered look on cards Although I love both of you cards; I have a hard time creating single layer cards, they always look incomplete to me.
Thanks for a chance to win that amazing stamp.
Blessings Bernie
I like simple
WOW - I love them both, but I'm especially drawn to the simplicity of the first, it's very striking!
"Botanical Collage" is the perfect name for this trend! I love this look, and tend to gravitate toward the more layered card. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
Love love love this trend. The birds are so beautiful and I love the vintage touches.
