I've said it before and I'll say it again: This is one moxie fab issue, my friends. Chock full of light-bulb inspiration, this is a must-not-miss. And while it is full of cards from your favorite tried-and-true inspiring designers, it's also full of knock-your-socks off cards from some amazing brand newbies.I call your attention to this because we here at Paper Crafts are always looking for new talent--and we found 16 never-before-published-with-us in this particular mix. Here are a few for your enjoyment:
Peace Out Card by Natalie Dever, p. 9Moxie Fab Alert: A trendy color scheme, well-executed stamping, and good design all spell a-c-c-e-p-t-a-n-c-e for this fun card!
Wish You Were Here Card by Noel Culbertson, p. 85Moxie Fab Alert: How do I trend thee? Let me count the ways. First, a plum color scheme; second, chairs; third, polka dots; fourth, a punny sentiment. In a blockbuster issue like Card Creations, trendy is always the name of the game!
Home for Chirstmas Card by Charlene Cundy, p. 96Moxie Fab Alert: This card sings "home" to me. The sheet music background paper, the Christmas houses, the scroll title, the candy cane twine, even the punched scallops all take me to that warm place in my heart. When we saw this for the first time, it evoked a strong emotional reaction in all of us--which is always a good thing at a submissions judging.
A Beautiful Life Card by Cindy Major, p. 14Moxie Fab Alert: The pairing of the chandelier with the damask is divine in this card. The French sentiment is a perfect complement, and the simple color scheme allows all the aforementioned elements to shine, shine, shine!
Missing You Trees Card by Renee Morris-Dezember, p. 87Moxie Fab Alert: This card is wow-ful on so many levels. Trendwise it's got a text background on kraft with paper pieced stamped trees. Designwise it's got a central focal point with a simple sentiment. Moxiefabwise it's a total hit!
What does it take to be a first-timer? What has to happen to actually get a card picked up by Paper Crafts magazine? Well, I've got a few "insider" tips for you my friends, so gather 'round and listen closely, for I'm about to give you the best advice you could ever get on how to get that project acceptance notification in your in-box:
- Study the styles of projects that we publish. We pay close attention to the kinds of styles that our readers are interested in seeing in our magazine. It's important that you are aware of them, too. That is not to say that we're not open to seeing something truly original, because we are, but we won't be publishing styles that the majority of our readers is not interested in seeing. (Psst...here are the styles our readers want to see most: fun and cute, clean and graphic, shabby chic, vintage, and classy and elegant.)
- Take a good photograph of your submission. Besides the design of your card, this is the most important aspect of your submissions. Take the photo straight on--no weird angles--we need to be able to see everything on your card in one image. Make sure your project is well-lit to ensure that we are seeing the true colors of the product you are using. Photograph your projects on a neutral background with no props so that we are not distracted from the card itself. Do not include a watermark.
- Make sure that your project is well-executed. No splooches or blops. No inconsistent stamping. If you've got any of that going on, clean it up before sending your submission in.
- Submit, submit, submit! I can't emphasize this enough. We get hundreds and hundreds of submissions--sometimes thousands--for every call that goes out for only a relatively few spots. If we don't pick your card, it's never personal, it's just that your project didn't happen to meet our needs at that particular time.
The beauty of Paper Crafts magazine is that everyone can play. Because our submissions judging is blind--meaning we don't know who the designers of the projects are when we look at them--everyone gets a fair shot. Even our Go-to Gals go through the blind submissions process. So, you don't have to be a paper crafting rock star and you don't have to have "connections." You just have to roll up your sleeves, muster up some courage, call on your own mad skills, take a good photo, and hit "submit." You never know, maybe you'll be receiving an email with "Project Acceptance Notification from Paper Crafts Magazine" in the subject line sometime soon! Hysterics to follow, I'm sure. :)
Now seriously, friends, what would an online promotional week be without another chance at a moxie fab prize? Leave me a comment by midnight MDT on Sunday, May 30 that talks about anything related to this post and I'll draw three random winners to receive a copy of Card Creations, Volume 8!
Calling all first-timers!
~Cath
PS Be sure and stop by tomorrow for a most-inspiring Top 10 Blog Hop with a prize so moxie fab, you'll be happy dancing 'til next Tuesday!

Gorgeous card, lots of inspiration today!! Thanks for the tips!! I so happen to have had my very first 'acceptancy for publication in a magazine'-mail earlier this week. Hysteric is the right word :) It was my first attempt. If you don't try, it also is never going to happen.
the tips for publication were great! And the cards - divine!
I would love to have a go! Do you accept submissions from people living overseas? Australia?
It was nice to see the 'tips' on card submission. I'm still to chicken to try it, but maybe one day!

One of these days. . . .
I'll see my name in print.

Thanks for the encouragement on submitting a project. It can be intimidating! The tips were a great boost to get moving and be creative. It's now at the top of list of things to accomplish this holiday weekend. Thanks for the tips!
Congratulations to those first timers how got published. How exciting for you!

Thanks so much for sharing these tips...I'm always so hesitant to submit as I feel I'd never get chosen, but maybe now I'll have the courage to do so!
Congrats to all those first timers!!!! It sure does pay to submit! I submitted for the holiday cards and more issue and I got my first acceptance email!! That was the most exciting moment, I am still so happy and can't wait to see my card in print! I will definitely be submitting more cards for upcoming calls, it was so much fun and such an honor to be chosen!
Thanks for the great advice, Cath! One thing I keep hearing is "Submit Submit Submit!". Would love to see one of my cards in a FABULOUS PC publication :o!
I really like all the tips and I will be sure to use them on my everyday projects.
These cards are amazing! Thank you for sharing the publishing tips. Very helpful!!
This issue of Card Creations 8 looks fabulous. I would love to win it. Thanks for the chance.
Yes it is true... If you don't submit it you will never know. I used to be afraid because I use to think why would they pick me but I said you know what if I don't try I will never know. I have been blessed to get a couple of cards picked! There is no feeling like knowing that your project will be in your fav. mag! That was one of my goals in 2010. So I tell everyone JUST do it.. Its fun and if your cards don't get pick donate them its a win/win situation!
Great "moxie fab" publishing tips!!
This issue looks fabulous and filled with great ideas. Thanks for everything!
Thanks so much for the tips!! Congratulations to the first-timers!!

WOW! AWESOME TIPS! Glad to know I don't have to be "SOMEBODY" to have a chance to be published, cause I be just ME!! LOL! Have a GREAT Day!
Wow wonderful tips and cute cards so much inspiration.
As a newbie I loved seeing the "first timer" cards and the great tips on how to submit. Thanks!
Thanks for the tips--who wouldn't be interested in being published in this amazing mag?!
These are great tips! I can't wait to have a little more time to try submitting something. But in the meantime, I'll carve out some time to create the cards I need right now... always fun! Thanks for the inspiration!
Working on my courage, Cath! The featured cards are all quite beautiful! That's a bunch of very talented first-timers!!! Thanks for the chance to win this great magazine, and for your tips on being published :) (I have a 'book' idea - any tips or suggestions there???)
Fab tips, now no one can stop me from submitting till I enter :)
All the cards are just amazing and so inspiring. Thanks so much for all the tips on getting published. Someday...I'm going to get the nerve to start submitting! Thanks for a chance.
Great first timer cards! You have inspired me to try this--thanks for the great tips!
Love these cards, especially the kraft one with striped trees. Thanks for the great tips! I will get up the courage to submit something one of these days...
TFS the wonderful tips! I'll keep all that you shared in mind so when the next open submission goes live I'll be able to submit some more of my designs with the confidence that I did all I could for my best chance to get noticed :)
I'm gearing up to submit. I'm trying out new techniques and thinking outside the box. Maybe soon I will see my name on the list of newbies! Thanks for the tips.
I am a first timer! I am waiting for your next call for submissions-Can't wait to get started!
Great tips for submitting entries. I guess the old saying is true for me--you can't win if you never enter!
Thanks for the great tips. I need to hurry up and submit my cards and be more organized when I create them so it's easier for me to write down the products I used.
Thanks for the tips and for sharing those great first-timers' projects with us.
OK, OK....I always think about submitting, but I never actually do it....I'm gonna go for it next time the door is open! Thanks!
Thanks you for sharing those great tips with us. I'd love to be accepted one of these days but have a little problem with the submit, submit, submit, lol!! I'll get my butt moving on it!
Thank you Cath for all the great tips on submitting cards. I have tried a few and will keep trying. I love all the inspiration you provide too!
Never submitted, but have thought about it. Great tips!
I really appreciate the publishing tips. Not sure when I'll have a project I feel worthy of submission, but it's nice to know some of the ropes for when/if that time comes.
I can agree with you that it IS possible to have a card published. After reading your blog and the PaperCrafts Connection blog, I tried submitting some of my cards and actually had one published in the March/April issue. What a thrill!! Now my goal is for it to happen again! :) I truly thank you for your encouragement on this blog to submit - it was the push I had needed to give it a try.
getting pub'd is one of my goals. thanks for the tips!
Argh, submission! One day I will summon up some courage and give it a try. But for now, I just love looking at all the amazing eye-candy that other designers create!
Hi, Cath
Oh my gosh, you made my day! This is my first time getting published in a magazine and to be featured on your Moxie Fab blog is just the cherry on top of the cake! Merci beaucoup!! :D
Cindy
Thanks for all those tips! There's just one thing that bothers me about the so-called "blind" submission because even if there's no watermark on the picture, there is the sender's name in the mail address. And often one has to include one's mail address in the body of the submission e-mail. So I'm not 100% sure about the "blind" part...
Thanks for the tips. I'm still trying to get my first card in the mag!
Thank you so much for the hints! It would be such an honor to be published! ps Love the cards you posted today!
I'm always scared to submit but you make me feel a tad bit more confident.
Thanks for all the tips on submissions. I think I'm almost ready to give it a shot.
it is nice to know that new designers are getting published. I love the new styles mixed in with the industry biggies that you find in each publication. I am over the hump of actually submitting, now to just keep trying and not get discouraged. Thanks for the helpful hints and tips. I am sure the process is overwhelming on your end, too.
ok, ok, you have motivated me to try harder and submit!
One of my goals is to start entering more of the challenges and maybe even submit some work some day. Thanks for the tips!
Wow - that Home for the Holidays card evoked a reaction in me, too. What a glorious card! TY for the tips on being published, as that is a dream of mine. TY for the inspiration as well!
Thanks for the submission tips! I have looked everywhere and cannot find this issue of Card Creations in the stores. Thanks for the chance to win it!
What a gorgeous cards Cath.
Hugs Riet.xx
Those cards are fabulous!
Thanks so much for sharing those tips!
Hi everybody! Agata posted a great question about the process of blind submissions. I’m in charge of the submissions at Paper Crafts magazine, and I wanted to insure you all that it is indeed blind. I am the only one that see the cards with the email addresses, and they are printed on the backs of each image that I print up. Granted, I know who did what, but with the bulk of submissions, it would be near impossible for me to memorize whose name goes with which project. When the decisions are made there are four other people (the entire editorial staff) with me who make the final selections, and they have no idea whatsoever who made each project. And as Cath says in this blogpost, even the Go-to Gals often don’t make the cut. We make our decisions solely on the images that are right in front of us, free of names.
Thanks for your great question, Agata. I’m sure there are others who were wondering the same thing!
Susan R. Opel
Editor, Paper Crafts magazine
I've been in your publications numerous times, but still have not achieved my ULTIMATE goal of snagging a cover spot! Hopefully my dream will come true--someday:)
I'm putting in a request for tougher paper to print the magazine on...my issue is already wearing out! Loved this issue...so many great ideas to use and lift!
LOVE these cards - each so unique and different - ah...that's why your mag is 'de bomb!!! :D
Thanks for the great tips too; always appreciated!
I love the christmas card!
Yup, still working up the courage to submit, but must work further on my photography skills. I'm taking more time to play with my camera!
You are so right!! I need to find time to create for submissions. How nice it would be to be pubbed by Paper Crafts! :)
this is my fav paper magazine, and I'm dying to be pubbed someday!
I may have to give submitting a whirl. You just never know, do you! Thanks for the pro tips!
I would love to be published in Papercrafts magazine!! Thanks for all of the tips!
Great article and helpful. I have had a few cards published in a UK magazine in the past but I was approached, I'd never thought of sending any in. I've never thought about sending any in to papercrafts mag being over the pond either, but I might just give it a go.
I've been a fan of papercrafts mag since around 2004 ish, need to set up another sub though, missed out on this last year pretty much.
I have question though, do you need to use purchased products in submissions? Is this helpful or does it not matter? I tend to make a lot of my own embellishments or my tools or items I use I've had for quite some time and I like to re invent them? Okay so more than one question, but just wondered. I don't buy much in the way of new papers etc, I have so much to use up, does this matter?
Sorry for waffle : )
Thanks so much for the tips. It does seem really scary to submit for the first time. I finally bit the bullet and entered a contest last night. I hope to some day see one of my cards published but in the meantime I'm having lots of fun creating them!
Wow, thank you for the great advice on submitting, Cath! I am inspired to give it a try!
I love that anyone has a shot to get published in your magazine. It is a great way to see new talent that wouldn't otherwise be seen which benefits all of us.
Love the paper pieceds stamped trees!
I love all of the cards and congrats to the newbies. I'm still a newbie trying to get published! ;) Sometimes in your publications, I see product that won't come out until about the time the mag comes out. Knowing that you run about 6 months ahead, how do people get their hands on that product?
Thank you so much for the advice on submitting cards for publication. It makes me think that maybe I should give it a try!
Hi friends! Just stopping by to answer a few of your questions on today's post! I'm so excited that so many of you are considering submitting--I mean, really, what have you got to lose?
Jo, Paul, & Jade: We accept submissions and have published designers from all over the world.
Patti J: You are welcome to send your book idea my way at cedvalson@papercraftsmag.com.
Paperkapers: It's fine to submit with embellishments, etc. that you have created on your own, just be sure that you include the instructions for how to make them on your submission form. As far as new papers are concerned--we do try to only publish cards where the products are still available to our readers, so you'll want to take that into consideration before submitting.
Jaclyn Miller: We do try to publish cards that use current product, but like I said above, as long as the product is available to our readers by the time the magazine comes out, and it's less than a year old, it's fair game to use.
Hope this helps, friends! Cath out for now! :)
Thanks for the tips! Next time there's a submission call I'll definitely try!
I have been wanting to submit, but I haven't built up enough courage to actually do it. Thanks for the tips. I may have to give it a try next call.
Hugs,
Amy ♥
Thanks so much for the awesome tips. I've just started submitting and I will keep at it. Love, love, love your blog, the magazine, and all the awesome projects! I'm hoping to pick up a copy of Cards 8 today!
So many clever ideas!
Ok, I'll give it a try! My next card making goal is to get published! There-I said it "outloud"!!
As someone yet to be published I really appreciate the advice! Thanks!
I've been a submission chicken for quite sometime however the recent helpful tips from the Go To Gal's Blogs have inspired me to give it go!
Thanks for the great insider tips!
I would love to win the new issue of Card Creations! I get so much inspiration from it but my creative budget is next to nil so I can't afford it. Thanks for posting so many of the beautiful cards here!
I really respect that your decision process is blind, and that you are constantly encouraging designers of all experience levels to submit.
I definitely have to follow the Submit Submit Submit tip. The more you send, the better your chances. Of to see the calls.
I have to admit I've submitted to other related contests but my personal taste is not the norm and the fact that I tend to use older papers, tends to keep me out of the running. I actually feel sad when a card or project does not win. So, I enjoy learning from others and am happier not submitting. Someday maybe I'll try again. Keep up the great work!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thanks for the insider tips on getting your cards published, great info!
Carol B
Thanks for your great tips on how to increase the chances of my card of being published, Cath! I will try to follow what you have written. And magazine in Germany is soo expensive...hope I win one of this edition...finger cross ;)
I can't tell you how much your publications mean to me! I'm relatively new to Card Making and Paper Crafts; and, I have to tell you that your publications give me such inspiration.
Thank you for your fabulous tips on how to submit cards for a chance to be featured in your magazine. I've often thought of submitting work, but my courage always fails. Your suggestions and words of wisdom have given me great courage to finally submit a bit of my work.
Thank you again ...
thank you so much for tips on how to be accepted. i have sent in the most beautiful card that i have ever made, and it wasn't accepted. but i need to remember the points you mentioned, and try, try again.
thanks for the great advice/tips! would love to be published...but gotta get those submissions going! LOVE the cards shared today!
Thank you so much for the publishing tips. Now I just have to work up the courage to do it. LOL
Little by little, I'm mustering up the courage to submit something. Thanks for the tips on helping my projects get noticed!! I just got my copy of Card Creations and it is AWESOME!!!!! I have gotten SO many ideas from it in just my first browse through.
Congrats to all the first-timers....what an inspiring assortment of cards!
I've always been nervous about submitting anything, but you've convinced me to at least look into it!
Thanks for the tips on submissions--I'm going to have to give it a try sometime.
I feel like the little engine that could...I think I can muster up the courage and submit! Thanks for all the tips and can't wait to see when there comes a time for submissions!
I think I will have to make sure I submit, submit, submit for the next pub call.
Congrats ladies! I of course will keep on trying! :D
Wonderful tips. What strikes me is the need to take good photos. IT AIN'T EASY!! I can't take good photos. I peruse alot of blogs and some cardmakers create beautiful cards but their photos do not do justice to their cards. We spend so much money and time on creating cards we love. It really pays off to take the time to learn to photograph them well.
I love the cards. The home for Christmas card is lovely. Thanks for a chance to win.
Wow - that was great advice on how to submit for getting published - I especially liked how you mentioned the styles your readers like.
I also loved how you described what you liked/saw in each card - this teaches us all something about design - could you do that on a regular basis?
Love these cards! So much talent out there! Thanks for the tips, I have not tried to submit but I might in the future!
This is very encouraging, especially about the blind selection process!
Thanks for the submissions tips!
Thanks for all the advice about getting a card published. I will save this info for future cards I may submit. I also LOVE the punch buggy "Peace out" card!
I can think of no better way to study up on the styles you are looking for than by carefully examining the current issue of Card Creations after I win it! ;)
What great cards, Cath! Loved the purple, "Wish You Were Here" card!
I love the card with the chandelier. The red and black is just delicious!!!
These are great tips!
Thanks so much for sharing!
That was really good to know, it is nice that everyone gets a fair shot. I am really lacking in the photo dept. Hopefully I will get better!
Congrats to all the first timers. I was really moxie fabbed by the Christmas card. Sounded like good advise to those interested in publication. That's not my cup of tea. I do love the inspiration I get from those who do venture into that world. Thanks
MUST.HIT.SUBMIT. I have a goal this year to actually submit a card....yep, actually submit one! Maybe NEXT year I will have a goal to be published. But for now, I just need to create, photograph, and upload! Thanks for the great tips and encouragement!

I've really enjoyed all the cards you've shown this week from the new issue - they're FABULOUS! Thanks for the great tips on submissions as well - good to know info.
I think it is terrific that the publication selection process is blind. That's a powerful incentive as a first-timer to feel that there is an equal chance for everyone. Love that you shared all those cards, Cath!!
I love all of the cards but especially tehe Christmas Card! It makes me happy!
Congrats to the first-timers! Your work is inspirational!
Thanks for the great tips!

I LOVE the inspirational projects!! and thank you for the great tips on publishing. I just started taking the publishing plunge, so this really helps alot!! :-)
Great tips! Thanks for them! As for the cards shown here, I can't decide which one I like more... one moment it's one, the next it's another!
What great eye-candy! It's inspiring that there are so many "newbies" being published. Thanks for the tips, maybe one day I'll muster up the courage! :)

What great tips! I hope that someday soon i can be a first time submitter!
Thanks for the encouragement. I guess you never really know when it can happen to you! Your card magazine is the best and is that way due to sharp creative eyes. Maybe one day...it will be my submission that be the one!!
Congrats all first timers and thanks for the tips, Cath! I managed to get one accepted for Holiday Cards and More and can't wait to see it in print! Keep on keepin' on, everyone! :)
Gorgeous cards! I would love to win!

Thanks for the insight into the process and for the hints and tips..... off to get creative! LOL!! Thanks Cath.
Those are some great cards!!
I will have to take those suggestions into considerations (have to go back and look at what styles are usually looked for). If I were to have a card chosen, I would truly be a first timer!
Great tips on submitting, now I just need to get up the nerve to do it!
Thanks for the tips. I'll put them to use and maybe you will see me in PC soon.
Hi Cath,
Thank you so much for your tips on sending a card sample. I was wondering how to do this and you answered my questions. Thanks again, and I just want to say that I love card creations magazine an the cards that are posted here are just beautiful. Thanks again for your help. Gina Kinde emai ginak1117@att.net
Thank you for the pointers Cath. You've helped me put my PC pub call rejection into perspective - and I needed that! :)
