Moxie Talk: Go-to Gal Kim Kesti

One of the trends I’ve been watching lately involves a common household product. I’ll bet 99% of you have it sitting in a drawer right now. Yep, it’s masking tape. This humble little guy is just waiting to make his debut in your next paper crafted project.

Would you like a little peek into my trend-watching experience? I first noticed masking tape on Poppy Talk’s cute blog banner.

Then, I started see Joy at Oh Joy! using it to ground her product groupings. Here’s a peek at one of Joy’s recent posts:

The first person I saw to translate this trend into a digital product was Danielle Thompson:

Her super fun frames are available for sale at Jessica Sprague’s site.

I’m really loving the masking tape trend by now. Then, the magical moment…my first sighting of actual Japanese Washi Tape for sale online. Both Cute Tape and The Tinted Mint have a nice selection of tapes in both solids and patterns:

I know the trend is official when one of my favorite scrapbooking manufacturers, 7Gypsies, shows their trendiness with a new product called Paper Tape.

This adorable card and envelope on the 7 Gypsies blog sets my heart a-fluttering:

Are you excited about this trend yet? Well, how about a card made by yours truly to really get the juices flowing?

Here’s the low down on this card: I pulled a long strip of masking tape from the roll and twisted it over and over (like you would twist crepe paper to hang it for a party.) Then, I rolled the twisted tape into a little rosette, slightly flattening the flower as it got bigger. Then, I found a nice piece of ribbon from my stash and cut it to length. I colored another piece of tape with my Copic marker (color BG05) and used it to attach my ribbon. A rub-on sentiment was the simple finish. It's pretty fun, isn’t it? And, quite trendy if I do say so myself.

Thanks for playing along with me today--now grab your masking tape and get creating!

Feeling all Moxie and Talk-y,

Kim

I saw tape used to create a faux leather over at SCS a few months ago. totally awesome. my question is, does that flower stick to the envelope?

OMGOSH! What a creative and inspiring idea! I've just used masking tape for the faux leather technique. I'm going to have to try this.

How fun! Though I don't think you'd want to use this on scrapbook pages--is it acid free?

Love the card! But would you believe I do NOT have any masking tape? I am a teacher no less! Ever since 3M came out with post it backed chart paper, I've no longer needed the tape! Guess I need some now. ;-P

Kim...how do you keep the masking tape flower from sticking to the inside of the envelope? Love the look, by the way

I'll answer a couple questions - first, the tape rosette is obviously a bit sticky after twisting it, but I did secure it with a glue dot to the card. And, I'm pretty sure if you dusted the flower with baby powder and brushed it off, the stickiness would be absorbed by the powder (it's an old sticker trick). That way, it would not stick to the envelope! ---Kim K.
