Five (x2) for Friday: A National Scrapbooking Day Blog Bop Featuring the Creating Keepsakes Dream Team

Are you ready for National Scrapbooking Day tomorrow? Being strictly a cardmaker myself, I have always just sat on the sidelines and watched from a distance as my editor friends at Creating Keepsakes (and Simple Scrapbooks, too) planned and scrambled and looked forward to the first Saturday in May, the day set aside to celebrate all the goodness in scrapbooking.

Much like they do when I'm planning and scrambling and looking forward to World Card Making Day the first Saturday in October.

But I know that many of you Moxie Fabbers are exclusively scrapbookers, and even more of you are scrapbookers who also make cards, and even more than that of you consider yourselves to be cardmakers who also scrapbook, and so today's blog bop is all about...drum roll please...the layout!

I recently had the chance to work with the Creating Keepsakes Dream Team on a collaborative feature we've got planned for our July/August issue (which you are going to "l-o-v-e" love, by the way--I just saw the first proofs and it is moxie inspiring), and friends, they are just the most delightful girls you could ever hope to e-meet. I've gone and "bopped" to each of their blogs, and boy howdy, I'm just amazed at all the creative inspiration there is in the world.

So, in honor of National Scrapbooking Day, I give you the talented ladies that make up the Creating Keepsakes Dream Team. Check it:

Big Big Dreams Layout by Maggie Holmes

Moxie Fab Alert: Um. Forgive me. But it just doesn't get much more trenderful than this. Maggie prepared this layout for a Studio Calico kit launch, and IMHO, she's used it to trendy perfection. Of note, the cut-out doily banner at the top of her awesome photo, the additional cut-out doilies grounding the bottom of the photo, the delicious white space, the fluttering butterflies, and that teensy cloud at the top? Drool.

Toon Town by Wendy Sue Anderson

Moxie Fab Alert: Wendy created this fun layout for a blog hop for American Crafts and I just love the way the product she chose adds to the pictures. I just want to hop right into that layout and live there for a while, don't you?

Daddy Love Layout by Suzy Plantamura

Moxie Fab Alert: Created for the launch of a kit from A Million Memories, this is one of Suzy's favorite photos of her husband and daughter. Not only is her use of product just gorgeous, but it's perfectly fitting--it's feminine without being too frilly--and since this layout is all about daddy and daughter that's going to be important--and it subtly frames the beautifully captured black and white photograph, letting it be the star of the show. Moxie love!

Explore CA Layout by Sara Winnick

Moxie Fab Alert: I love the treatment of space in this 8 1/2" x 11" layout. Sara's made great use of this format's vertical nature by placing the photos on the right hand side. She capitalizes on the movement in the design by placing that fun title in the center left, the "explore" takes your eye to the top right, you cruise down the photos where your drawn into the journaling. And the "A" and the "N" photos tie it all together. An excellent example of great design!

Moments Layout by Susan Weinroth

Moxie Fab Alert: Let's start with the color scheme. Mmm. Mmm. Let's mention the delicious red and white doily paper at the top of the layout. Let's not forget the cloud paper in the background of the lower half of the layout. Let's also notice the way she's broken up the space: divide in half, divide the top half again. Let's discuss the brilliant pop of red in the title in the lower left hand corner that ties the whole thing in. Let's delight in those cutie-pie photos. Let's.

We Love Shows Layout by Laura Vegas

Moxie Fab Alert: Laura wanted to document her girls' favorite TV shows. I love that she's used groovy tween-ish paper to set the stage, and that she's pulled promo shots from each of their favies. Can't you imagine the sweet trip down memory lane they'll have one day when they look back at this time in their lives, permanently captured on the page?

Secrets Layout by Cindy Tobey

Moxie Fab Alert: The photos are striking--and intriguing--aren't they? They just beg you to look deeper. Using a digital kit from BasicGrey, Cindy has added elements to her layout that you can only do with a digi kit--and I find that intriguing as well. But what intrigues me the most? The "secret" that's being told to Mr. Einstein. If you read the journaling, you see that Cindy's intrigued as well!

Take Flight Layout by Kim Watson

Moxie Fab Alert: This layout just seems so pleasantly cohesive to me. The photo of the children with their arms outstretched towards the sun. The less intense floral background that allows the title and the sun and the flowers and the butterflies and the border to reach out and grab us. The scalloped wood border that grounds it all. And the journaling, the piece de resistance: The warmer weather always puts a spring in your step. The hope that comes with the new season puts dreams to flight. Which is, of course, emphasized by that sweetie banner. Yum.

Today Layout by Jen Jockisch

Moxie Fab Alert: In this layout it is clear: it all starts with the photo. Everything in this layout works to emphasize that colorful, yet tender photo of a mother and daughter who have shared a bittersweet moment together. I love the soft, vintage nature of both the textures and the colors in this layout and how they all work together so well to make the photo shine.

Mom! Layout by Deena Wuest, originally published in the June 2009 issue of Creating Keepsakes magazine

Moxie Fab Alert: Can you say balance? Can you say using typographical elements to emphasize a concept? Can you say delicious color scheme? Can you say fantastic photos? Can you say heartfelt and creative journaling? Can you say moxie fab?

Tell me what you love about these layouts, friends. Or tell me about how you are planning on celebrating National Scrapbooking Day. Or tell me why you love to scrapbook. The thing I love about scrapbooking can be perfectly summed up by these gorgeous layouts... there is no right or wrong. Everyone scraps in their own unique way, but the end result is always the same... a timeless record of days gone by to be treasured by the scrapper and their friends and family. Can't wait for NSD!!!

I love the diversity of the layouts and how much creativy can spring from such different ideas.

I love that although we might all have the same products, each creation is uniquely different. Our personalities are allowed to shine through our pages. I used to be a Shoe-aholic, until I discovered scrapbook supplies, and now I am a proud Scrap-aholic :) Thank you for sharing these stunning layouts.

I'm a scrapbooker first and foremost and a card maker second, so I loved seeing layouts featured here on Moxie Fab World. They are all so beautiful and unique. Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm hoping to get some time to scrapbook tomorrow on NSD.

beautiful pages! i like the hands on approach with cards, but i scrapbook digitally.

These layouts are beauties, every single one of them. I consider myself to be a cardmaker that also scrapbooks. To me, they are the same to the extend that I love to use the same materials for both, but I always find myself struggling with the big amount of space to fill when I scrapbook ;)

Angela said...

Gorgeous stuff! I recently shifted from primarily cards to layouts, too -- and I scrap 8.5x11 because it feels more card-like! I love both!

Nancy said...

These layouts are masterpieces. Little works of art for sure. I love the many different ways they showcase the photos. So creative. I began my paper craft experience with scrapbooking and later with cards. This post is so inspiring and makes me realize I need to get back to making more layouts!

Karen said...

I am not a scrapbooker but I am always amazed at the wonderful layouts that feature such great photos. i make cards and how to someday get more into scrapbooking. What I love is that most of the supplies and tools I use for my cardmaking and be used for scrapbooking too...love paper!!

jan said...

Love to see how 5 different people come up with 5 entirely different and creative ways to use the same materials or sketches! Amazing! It fuels me to be even more creative myself!

Jenn Greeley said...

Yeah...I'm pretty much a card maker too. However, I did sign up for a scrapbook class at my local CKC. Anyway, these all certainly inspire and make we want to get right too it. And maybe that's just what I need to do, dive in.

Great layouts! I am mainly a cardmaker but I get inspired when I see such wonderful pages. I am going to go to Archiver's to make some scrapbook pages to celebrate National Scrapbooking Day.

I love scrapbooking so I can save memories of my family. But since I discovered copic markers a year ago, I have really gotten into stamping and card making. I love coloring with them. It is so much fun.

All the layouts are fabulous and so inspiring. I just love seeing the different ways everyone adds there special touch to each page. I make more card then layouts. For some reason it's harder for me to do layouts. HNSD!

Now you're talking! I'm so excited to see a post about SCRAPBOOKING! I love taking a photo that has special meaning to me or someone in my family and showcasing on a page where I have the ability to be creative and make that photo take center stage! To me it all starts with the photograph. It's captures a moment in time that is worth capturing, and creating a layout about that moment? Priceless! Thank you for featuring my true love today . . . scrapbooking!! ♥

ScrapMomOf2 said...

I'm so sorry . . . I forgot to mention how much I love the layouts that are featured! Wonderful inspiration!! Have a moxie fab weekend!! :)

Wow, I have been out of scrapbooking for too long. These are genius! I think it's amazing how much cardmaking and scrapbooking crossover. Yummy papers, layouts, embellies, they are all fantastic.

waldenbunch said...

I was a scrapbooker for years (still am) but now enjoy making cards to encourage and minister to others. It's a lost art and such an easy way to make a difference.

Dana H said...

The layouts on your post are all great. It amazes me what people can come up with! I just plan on being at my scrap table on national scrapbook day. Maybe next year I'll plan something bigger...

Renee S. said...

Each layout presents interesting elements, and they're all wonderful. I'll be spending the day with my little granddaughter. Hopefully I'll be able to capture special moments that I can scrap. The layouts you've shown provide great inspiration!

Mary (Happy Now) said...

These are FANTASTIC layouts! I started out as a scrapbooker, acquired a TON of supplies, started making cards too because so many of the supplies carried over, the canvas was smaller, and the completion time commitment less... BUT I have recently started doing some digital scrapbooking, so I once again am making some progress on completed pages! Yay! I am heading out of town this weekend, though, for my nephew's birthday day, so I will have to "observe" this fun holiday sometime next week... Thanks!

craftymom205 said...

I scrapbook because I love to preserve my family's life.

Alison said...

I love how they use such creativity in their layouts! I need to remember to just let loose and have fun on my pages:)

Wow! Great layouts! I love how the Moments layout used all color, but emphasized the photos by making them b/w. I also love the exclamation point in the Mom layout--love how she put her journaling around it! Great stuff!

I love every single layout. They each have their own style and that is just awesome.

For Nation Scrapbook Day, I would love to say that I am getting lost in paper and playing, but I have my nephews birthday party to attend almost an hour away...that is what I will be doing :)

All these layouts are awesome, but it took me ages to just get past the first one by Maggie Holmes. Absolutely brilliant. I just sat and absorbed all the little details and stored them in the back of my mind so that I can pull them out and make them mine someday in the future :)

Love all the layouts but especially like the ones that show the use of multiple photos.

Oh, love these layouts! Each shows the personality of the artist who created it....and that is what I love about all forms of papercrafting. It's an opportunity to let the creative "you" on the inside get out so that everyone can see that unique part of your heart.

My DD moved into her first house 2 weeks ago and the pictures have been piling up. I think I will make her a mini book of my fav pics. It has been a fun experience for her so far. The moving company got her stuff unloaded quickly because their next client of the day was David Bowie! Rock on! Happy Scrapbook Day!

JustYolie said...

Love the layouts! I'll be cropping with friends and sure to have loads of fun!!

Heidi said...

I have a really hard time with scrapbooking. I hate feeling like I'm always catching up and I feel like I'm wasting resources if I only put one picture on a page. Then there's the issue of actually getting photos printed, which I never do! That's what got me into cardmaking in the first place! But for the sake of National Scrapbooking Day, I'm gonna pull out some photos and get to work this weekend!

Sandy said...

Thank you for pointing me toward those blogs! I'm full of fabulous inspiration for this weekend! I scrapbook, digital scrapbook and make cards. I will be spending tomorrow at acherryontop dot com, where they are have a HUGE 3 day crop - top prize to win is a GYPSY!

I love how many of the designers use white space yet find ways to combine interesting papers, journaling and the latest texture trends. Hard to believe that the pages are still calm. Great inspiration!

I love all the tiny touches of detail, like the borders of paper strips & the embellishment clusters. It's the small things like that which make good layouts great :)

The McCullough Family said...

I plan to spend the holiday by trying my first ever 12x12 layout. I have only done limited scrapping on 6x6 and am going to try to go big!

I love the colors in each layout. So unique and creative! Great inspiration indeed!!

Tracey McNeely said...

All of these layouts are so unique and inspiring. I am a card maker who tuned into scrapbooking because of my kids. I want them to have memories of their childhood. Although my true love is cardmaking, scrapping is always on my plate.

ArlaMo said...

It's all in the details! Just love the little things each scrapper adds to her pages that make me want to look deeper!

Keva said...

The one thing for me that differs between scrapbooking and cardmaking is the recipient. In my head, scrapbooking is for ME and so it's hard to do. I am my toughest critic and it's never good enough. I could never heap praise upon myself. cardmaking, on the other hand, is for someone else so it's easier to do. I know they'll love it (ok, hope)and it feels good to do. I don't have to judge it because it's not for me. Does thas make ANY sense? lol

Michelle said...

These are all amazing - such great ideas! National Scrapbook day for me will be spent at work but they already know I have my tote packed and will be working there - gotta love my job!

Wow, these are all amazing layouts! Love their unique styles. I started out scrapbooking, then got into cardmaking. I love doing the little details on cards, but my scrapbooking pages are much simpler, mostly because I like to stay caught up on my albums. It's been a while since I scrapped, so maybe I need to break those out this weekend!

Working on my week in the life project has brought home why I love to scrapbook- my whole family took part in this project and are loving the bits of our life all together in one place to look at, laugh about, get a little teary about, it is all about preserving those memories about the moments in time that too quickly pass from our memories.

Kerry said...

All these layouts are so inspiring! I am lucky enough to be getting to spend tomorrow with a group of lovely ladies, scrapbooking the day away!

Sweetsmilz said...

Cardmaking is super easy for me. I can pull a card together in nothing flat. Scrapbooking takes me a lot longer to put a page together, thinking about how I want it to be laid out. Cards are great, but will probably get tossed. Scrapbook pages are my legacy to my family.

I'm not a scrapbook maker...I have two that are sitting in the closet half finished. So I was really glad go see these fantastic layouts and gleen some ideas. I think the biggest inspiration was the use of space, as in there should be plenty of white space. I always felt like I had to fill in every inch of the page and these examples show it's not necessary.

Branch Out Designs said...

I design cards and also scrapbook and I love both. Depending on the mood I will do one or the other. I love how scrapbooking is a little bit more freeing, whereas card making allows me to follow a sketch and a layout.

The scale is also fun. Sometimes I like to scrapbook with paper and embellishments and then use the same supplies on a card, and it's fun to work with a change in scale!

Well actually, I'm gong to joining the Creating Keepsakes folks for an all scrapping affair on their CLUB CK. I usually go to a crop but this year will be at home. Tanja said...

I love recording the memories and presenting the photos in scrapbooking but I start with the photos and let them dictate the colours/style of my page. Cardmaking is "freer", you can start with a stamp or pretty paper and go anywhere, unfortunately there is not the aspect of keeping them for good and recording the memories, but is is great to give fab cards to others to appreciate. I like it that I can make cards for an hour or so, I seem to need a good 2.5 - 3 hours free to scrap.

Black Pearl said...

The Layouts are amazing pieces of artwork by these gals! I love them all.what fascinates me is the colors combination with the pictures. which is one thing that I sometimes get stuck in. I started as a scrapbooker last year. And as there is not much instructors out here,i learned everything online. I also started making cards. working on cards has helped me with learning to use colors and layouts, and so my scrapbooking has improved. Any technique i learn, i first use on cards and then put it on scrapbooks. On this National scrapbooking day, i plan to introduce this art to at least 3 of my friends or relatives. Also I am making a page on my scrapbooking journey up till now. lets see how others celebrate. Happy Scrapbooking all you Scrapbookers!

Planning to spend tomorrow checking my local Ben Franklin Crafts store. They have a very nice paper arts department, so I think they'll have something fun going on!

I love that every layout is a different style! I love to make cards and lately I have been finishing more LOs! I will have to make a point to finish a LO tomorrow in celebration :>)

NSD is literally my favorite day of the year. I am both a scrapper and a cardmaker. The two are similar in that they both indulge my love of paper and both stretch my creative muscles.

PamS said...

My favorite of these is the Moments layout. Those pictures...so precious. But by looking at all the layouts, I think that inspiration might have hit. I can see some scrap lifting this weekend.

Susan said...

I love the color combo of Susan's layout and love the concept of Laura's! =D

Lori said...

Wow, awesome pages! I love the idea of the favorite TV shows. I would like to CASE that idea and make a page for my daughter, too! Thanks for the inspiration.

Great layouts. I am going to celebrate NSD at home scraping and visiting Club Ck all day.

mica said...

These are all so beautiful!! Love to see different styles, different color combos, different designs. I'm hoping to scrap all day to celebrate NSD tomorrow:)

Jen said...

Oh my gosh, these LO's are superb! Lately, cardmaking has become easier for me and I sometimes just put elements down and see if it works. For scrapping LO's, I always have to have a plan and LINES. I'm going to visit a LSS on NSD to see all their new goodies! Thanks for the chance at something from your prize drawer!

Melanie said...

I love these layouts because....they make me want to create RIGHT NOW! They are so fun and fresh and gorgeous!!!

I hope everyone has a fun national scrapbook day!

Shawninaz said...

I'll be enjoying NSD by checking out all the goings on online and yes I'll be scrapbooking that evening as I always do!

These are wonderful and they have inspired me to do some catching up on my scrapbooking!!

These pages really intrigue me to think more about scrapbooking. I really only do cards, but I have a new baby granddaughter and suddenly thinking about scrapbooks a lot more !

Every layout has its interesting points, but I think I particularly like that last "Mom" layout. The balance, the color scheme, the open space. Just enough detail to be interesting and occupy your attention, but not so much detail to overwhelm and confuse you. The combo of the tiny text as a border, the bigger text as a message, and the big punctuation as a shape element is terrific. Cute kids, too! Love the whole thing.

My card making and scrapbooking are VERY similar. Not only do I use the same products, but I use sketches for both.... and sometimes the SAME sketch.

Cyndi B said...

My scrapbook pages are nothing like the designers. I put LOTS of photos on the page and then decorate. I don't like to use all my pretty papers because the photos hide it. Which is why I like card making so much - all the room for paper and stuff. Plus I find cards so much easier because there is no journaling. Writing is hard.

connie said...

I love all the LO's. I just scrapbook and new at card making. I will be spending tomorrow online and scrapping at home.

Kim M said...

I love Laura's layout and how she really made it from her teens point of view. I feel in love with it the moment I saw it. For NSD day, I plan on staying home and spending time with family and hope to get some scrappin done.

Fabulous layouts! I plan to spend National Scrapbooking Day card making! Thanks for the chance to win!

I love these layouts and the color combinations they use. Thanks for the inspiration!

i'm not a scrapper, but i like the simpler layouts. i find the two with the large, almost empty borders to be especially eye-catching. i also make my cards with clean lines and limited embellies. i like looking at the fancier pages and cards, just don't make them.

Carol said...

I will scrapbook this weekend, or at least I hope I will unless..... I hear a card idea calling! Okay I confess, I make more cards than layouts, way more, but, scrapbooking is what got me into cardmaking and they have a lot in common. I love to play with paper, markers, stickers, bling, etc and both give me that opportunity. But they are different too. I can get a card done quickly and then cheerfully send it off to make someone happy. My scrapbook pages take much longer and I could never part with them!

I adore making cards, yet have never tried my hand at scrapbooking. After seeing today's highlighted layouts, I might have enough inspiration to get started!

Isabel Z said...

I love to scrapbook because it preserves my family's memories. Our scrapbooks are a snapshot of who we are.

Kristin said...

I'm really trying to get into scrapbooking too - as I enjoy the immediate gratification of card making! I LOVED the layouts - especially the mom one.

Jessica said...

Lovely projects, Cath!! These gals are amazing. I'm a cardmaker 100% but am contemplating on becoming a scrapbooker mainly of my writings. Also, I find giving away some of my cards difficult. After all the work designing it, time, materials used I just don't want it to go in the trash. So for that and because it's appealing I might give scrapbooking a try-starting today. Please wish me luck. I'm horrified of long term projects, hence cardmaking ;) So today it's just going to be me on the big old dining table with scrps and inspiration from these fabby ladies. YAY!!!

Happy Scrapbooking Day :)

My daughter in law is coming over and we're going to craft all weekend. I prefer to scrap digitally. It seems faster to me using PSE7... I can drag and drop everything and not print my photos until project is finished. My paper crafting is cards and altered items. Scrapbook pages are basically bigger cards with pictures added :)

that layout by maggie just knocked my socks off! Wow.

I, like you, am a cardmaker. But I like how some of these layouts could be translated into cards. Especially the Dad's Love layout. Thanks, Cath!

I started out making layouts and now am more into cardmaking and papercrafting.

Anything that Laura Vegas does I LOVE!!! She is such an inspiration. I am one of those "jack of all trades" master of none type of crafter....you name it I have done it so of course I love scrapbooking and have just recently gotten into making cards and then my latest obsession is COPIC markers!!!

I wish I had time this weekend to scrap but my daughters have ALOT of soccer games this weekend so there will be no time for me to have some fun.

To all of you HAPPY NSD!!!

I can't possibly pick a favourite from those... they are all amazing in their own way. What I love about scrapbooking is that there's no rules - I can scrap my way, I can relax and zen out, and at the end I have a piece of art, a piece of me, and a page for my family album. Love love love this hobby :)

I'll be watching HSN - they will have lots of products for sale for National Scrapbooking Day -- and I'm looking to pick up a Cricut.

I loved all the LOs--some pretty papers I hadn't seen, some banners I love.... What did I do today on NSD??? Scrap, chat, read blogs, etc! It was all about celebrating one of my favorite holidays! :)

Moxie Fab alert: having an amazing DH that allows me to devote these weekends to a hobby I love--even though it means not spending time together. He is a great guy!

The reason I like scrapbooking is I can put all different element into one big page. I do like making cards, but sometime it limited my space. Plus, I like put my page on a cover sheet to make a scrapbooking album. I just like flipping around

Pamk said...

love that toontown layout. I am so looking at anything disney since we're going in november. I scrap because I want to leave my kiddos better memories than my mom did. And I always try to have a least one picture of myself at each event. When my mother passed at 35 i found few good pictures of her. But the ones i found she was laughing or eating. We laughed and said as least she was being true to herself cause that was mom.

Wow the layouts these ladies created are awesome. Love how they're scrAPPIN outside the box. Love susan weinroths picture clumping. I'm more of a scrapper than cardmaker. But I love scrappin for the mere reason I'm preserving memories for my children and their children. Happy NSD~! Thanks for the winning opportunity.

I love all these layouts, but I especially love Susan Weinroth's. I love everything about it :)

scrapbooking is what started on me on this grand adventure in the first place..... and I have just returned to it again in the past few months. I must say that the page of the girl and her father speaks to my heart. they are all wonderful, though.

scrapbooking has brought me and my younger sister together. we fought like cats and dogs growing up and never seemed to have anything in common until a few years ago when we both started scrapping around the same time coincidentally. now, we talk every day, sometimes several times a day and consider ourselves not only sisters, but best friends...sounds cheesy, but i don't care. i have a bond with my sis that scrapbooking made. :)
