Moxie Monday: Material Girl from Cosmo Cricket

Well, hello Moxie Fabbers! I hope this blog post finds you well. Believe it or not, we're at the beginning of a rather regular week. As in, there's no special issue promotion, I'm not on vacation, nor am I at a tradeshow. It's just business as per usual, and as much as I love those "special" weeks we share here in the Moxie Fab World, I love business as per usual the best of all. :)

(Thanks to everyone who left comments in last week's posts for Stamp It! Cards Week! Oh my goodness but we had ourselves some fun, didn't we?)

There's nothing business as per usual with today's Moxie Monday, however. Unless, of course, you are talking about the way that Cosmo Cricket keeps cranking out collections that rock this moxie fab world of ours--their business-as-per-usual modus operandi. Take the Material Girl collection, for example. What I love the most about this line is not just how it inspires me visually, but I love how it runs a thread through my life that stitches me through to my past.

When I was a girl, my mom made most of my clothes. We spent hours and hours at the fabric store choosing patterns and fabrics, and while I would rather have had store-bought jeans with their even, flat-fell seams and glossy threads, and while I might have wished for more fancy dresses to wear to my piano recitals, my mother was on a tight budget and had a gift for putting in buttonholes and zippers at a time when the equipment with which these were made was cumbersome, clunky, and confounding at best.

When I grew too old for homemade clothes, I watched my mother continue to make her own wardrobe in an effort to save money as she worked as an elementary school teacher. Surrounded by grandmothers and aunts who also created magic with a sewing machine, I learned how to sew myself. I made my own original patterns to create custom Christmas gifts for my friends and later found myself sewing the entire layette for my babies, decor for my home, Halloween and dance costumes, and countless nightgowns for Christmas Eve.

And so, it is a cherished, humble nostalgia that whispers to me as I look at the 12 x 12 papers that Material Girl offers. It takes me back to a long-lost time that is not quite as far away from my heart as I thought:

Ready Set Chipboard

Elements

Cardstock Stickers

Borders

Where does this line take you, friends? I'd love to hear. Leave me a comment by midnight MST on Sunday, March 7 and I'll choose two random winners to receive some nostalgia of their own.

Before I sign off for the day, a couple of things. Business as per usual, I'll be announcing all of last week's winners in my weekly Winnerday post (soooo exciting!) Remember, you must send me an email to claim your prize, so be sure and check in to see if you are one. (I know, I can h-a-r-d-l-y stand the suspense, either!)

And of course, I'll name the Trigger Targets from last week's Tuesday Trigger and have a new Trigger for you tomorrow as well.

Also, you've got until tonight at midnight to enter the Fun with Floss Challenge. I'll show the five winning projects on Wednesday's post, so if you want to be considered, now's the time.

I am a material girl,

~Cath

PS Speaking of challenges, don't forget the Olympics of Stamping Challenge that goes through March 8! Gold, silver, or bronze, you're a winner just for entering! :)

my mum hated sewing, but had inherited my grandmother's sewing machine. So I taught myself to sew at a young age and experimented with making my own teddy bears. They were so ugly - but I loved the process!

Ange Kelly said...

My mum used to make clothes for my brothers and sisters. Sherring was big back then LOL!

I too learned to sew from my Mom. I loved that I could choose any fabric and pattern, and have something different from everyone else. I do not take enough time for sewing any more, but I need to change that.

I too have wonderful memories of my mother sewing all of our dresses and many tops (She never did try something like jeans.) She even made all of the bridesmaids' dresses for all three of her daughters' weddings. I lost her last April, and I kept her sewing machine.

Sewing has always been a "background" hobby for me. I mostly stick to home dec projects and a few things for my girls (after the great "make your own stretch pants" disaster from the 80's I stay clear of trying to sew my own clothes).

These papers are just beautiful - thanks for the chance to win!

Suzanne C said...

No sewing here.. Probably why I like the paper even more as it is a skill I don't possess!

Melissa S said...

I remember sitting with my Grandmother as she calmly and effortlessly created beautiful creatons with her sewing machine.

i have an AWFUL memory of a home made outfit!! my evil stepmother (yes she was) made my sister and i pink flower girl dresses for her daughters wedding..not so bad i hear you say...she made us wear them to our COMMUNION ceremony!! every other girl was wearing virginal WHITE while we were made to wear one hot pink and one less hot pink (think i might of lucked out on the shades of pink) flappy, ugly satin dresses!!

now when i sew i stick to bunting and softies, no clothes for my three girls and no bowl cuts either!!

thanks for the chance and walk down memory lane :)

My mom sewed most of my clothes and I learned to sew from her. I made clothes for my 3 daughters. I can remember one daughter coming home from school and asking me to make a pair of pants for the next day. And I did.

Susan said...

I never learned to sew, but my mom made all my clothes in the 70's. Wide leg (elephant ear) pant suits are my immediate memory ... possibly my worst memory! She made my swimsuits, gowns and all the clothes I wore to school. I can't imagine doing that for my kids. Where would I find the time?

ytet said...

I learned also sewing from my mother. She used to sew my dress whenever there's an occasion at the school. The Material Girl collections are all beautiful. Can't wait to have it here in our local store. Thanks for the chance to win.

My mom is a sewer. She actually has made a few wedding dresses and many bridesmaids' dresses. Needless to say she's makes a lot of her own clothes. I definitely didn't get her talent. I have a sewing machine but we just barely speak civilly to one another.

My mom is not a creative woman, but she did sew my sister and I some beautiful christmas dresses one year. She hand embroidered little christmas trees on the apron on the front. Now, my two daughters have had the honor of wearing these. I think I treasure these dresses for the reason my mom is creativly challenge, she must have put a lot o time and effort into them. I can only hope my girls cherish the clothes I make for them!

Karen said...

I can picture my mom at her old Singer mending clothes and the sound of the machine going....love those papers....would make some fab vintage style cards....

I remembered when I used to sew all my clothing for college. I was always wearing new clothes that costs less than $5...those times... I am planning a short vacation from work and spend that time sewing a few curtains and desoration for my home. These papers will be perfect for documenting that process.

Kimberly said...

I'm a quilter as well as a papercrafter so I love things like this line that combine my interests.

my mom used to sew all of our clothes when we were kids-this included costumes, dresses...she even made my sissy's matron of honor dress for my wedding just 3 days before because she was 8 months pregnant and it matched perfectly!
i just love the vibe of this collection because i was an 80's baby and the colors and images fit perfectly :)

thanks for sharing this!!!!!

My mom used to sew all kinds of stuff for my sister and me. I wish I had some extra time on my hands to learn how to sew. I have all these ideas floating around in my head that haven't been brought to life... yet!

Awesome!

i just love the fresh colours of this new line! CC does it again!

the designs bring me back to Grandma's clothesline... she wasn't a seamstress, although she always fixed my ripped seams and hemmed my pants. but she ALWAYS had laundry on the line, blowing in the breeze. it was always a joy to visit and help her take the clothes down off the line to be folded and put away. :)

My mom always sewed our Halloween costumes but for awhile she sewed us some clothes. My favorite thing was picking out fabric for doll clothes that she would sew.

Diane S. said...

My mom sewed for all the girls in my family-my younger sister and I always had outfits identical except for the color! I come from a long line of seamstresses-my great grandfather was a tailor. So I have carried on the gift of sewing and always made my girls clothes-Easter and Christmas dresses etc. Cosmo's Material Girl line is absolutely fabulous!! I would love to win it!!Thanks

Melanie said...

My mom made all out clothes, too. And yes, my piano recital dresses were all home-made. (gasp!) She saved the scraps for quilt tops, and I love looking at the quilts and remembering the fabrics and whose clothing item it belonged to.

Material Girl is by far my favorite from Cosmo at this time!

This totally takes me back to my Mom's sewing room! All the stacks and piles of fabric! So cheery and eclectic. Thanks for the chance to win!

I grew up with a Mom who could sew amazing things, but of course as a child I was horrified that my sister and I were dressed alike. lol I can sew basics, but I did not get the talent that my mother, grandmother, and aunt have with any machine they use. I still try of course, but if hand sewing is an option I'm happy to jump on that first! It is a gorgeous paper collection, and brings back amazing memories. :) Have a happy Monday! :)

This takes me back to kindergarten, believe it or not. We had to cut little dresses for the paperdolls. This line remind me of it. It is so cute.

Cath, You said it all so well! When I started sewing my own clothes, I mean all my clothes, it was frustrating not to have the latest fashions and so I began designing my own.....I am happy to buy my clothes today and design cards instead! Hope to incorporate more fabric into designs this year. Just picked up Basic Grey fabric.....will see where it takes me.

I just love the rulers, so many things you can do with them! The colors are awesome too.

My 8 year old daughter really wants to be a fashion designer when she grows up. She is begging me for a sewing machine and some fabric. Do you think she'd settle for the paper kind? Love it!

I LOVE this collection. It reminds me of every prom and homecoming I went to. My mom made all of my dresses, and I loved them because no one else had one like mine. When I was in elementary school my mom made me a pound puppy, because the real ones were too expensive. She was always making me wonderful and very special things. ;D

This line definitely makes me think of one of my most cherished possessions - my grandmother's sewing table, crafted by my grandfather. Even though I have more notions than fit in the three little drawers, that piece will never be replaced. Thanks for sharing your story with us, Cath :)

My mom ran a small business making doll clothes - it started off that she was making things just for my dolls, but pretty soon everyone I knew was begging for clothes too. I got to help her sew on little embellishments like snaps and rosettes. We were even featured in the local newspaper. What fun! :)

Material Girl is indeed nostalgic for me. My mother also made most of my clothes, and in my early childhood many of my clothes were made from chicken feed sack fabric she kept from our chicken house. She lovingly removed the stitches from each bag, washed, ironed and folded them and used only the prettiest pieces for my clothes. A few years ago she handed down the remaining feed sack fabric to me, and I have it stacked on a shelf in my craft room. Material Girl reminds me of those vintage fabrics.

Today's Moxie Fab takes me back to memories of my beloved grandmother who had one of those old sewing machines where there was a large foot plate that rocked back and forth. She would get that going at lightning fast speeds that would make me sit back with awe. Then she would give me her fabrics scraps and I would make clothes for my barbie dolls with her help. Wow, I hadn't thought about that in years ... thanks for the memory!!

This takes me back to when I was a little girl. During the summers, we would go spend a couple of weeks at my Pepaw and Memaw's house. Right across the dirt driveway was my Granny's house. It's funny, I've got so many memories of my grandmother sewing our clothes and my mother making beautiful draperies and curtains for every room in our house. I grew up with the sewing bug firmly instilled within my soul. When I was raising my daughter I sewed all of her clothes - it was so much dressing her up, especially when she was a toddler. When she grew older and began attending high school dances, I created one-of-a-kind formals for each dance. It was like having my very own, real live Barbie doll (or, should I say "Mandy" doll). ;o} I don't sew as much as I'd like, but between my fabric collection and my paper collection, I have so much fun! This Material Girls collection is something I MUST have!

This reminds me of learning to sew on my grandmothers Singer treadle machine. She made closets full of clothes for herself and others. As well as handmade Teddy Bears and home dec projects. The old treadle was all she ever used, even though electric machines had been available for a long time, and she could easily afford one. I now have that machine and still use it. It gives me a warm feeling every time I look at it.

My grandmother was the seamstress in our family and she could make anything! She tried mightily to teach me to sew and I can...but I don't enjoy it so I don't do it. Once when I was having a particularly rough wrangle with some fabric she said, "Honey, you have to make the fabric do what YOU want it to do, not what IT wants to do!" I think of her every time I face a challenge. So these papers make me think of my grandma.

Wow - I had forgotten all the things my mom had to make for us because money was tight (she was a teacher, too!). When I was in high school, we were the same size and I inherited many of her clothes when it was time for both of us to update our wardrobes to match our ages. My mom even made my wedding dress but this time it was at my request because she was super talented. I am always surprised to learn how many women don't know how to sew and am thankful she taught me to make many items (with zippers and buttonholes!).

Now it's Paper.
And Cosmo Cricket is on top. Material Girl is awesome would love to win. Thanks

Sounds like my mom is much like your mom. My mom was a tailor by trade, as was my grandmother. Much of my clothes from my childhood was homemade, too, favorites being made from polyester of course! LOL! It's no wonder I aced the sewing part of Home Ec, I suppose. I love this line because it does make me think of those times, and of my grandmother (who has passed away), mom's sewing room, yards and yards of fabric and spools of thread. Fun times to be sure!

There is something about this collection that is past, present, and future for me . . . in the past, I would love when my mom sewed. She didn't do it often, and I know she would never claim to be an expert, but I was fascinated! I used to love looking through her sewing basket!! The present is me using my much-loved $15 garage sale find on my cards and layouts, and the future is me learning to use this machine to do more than paper stitching! I would love to purchase a pattern and make something! Then again, I can also experiment with jeans, fabric I've collected, etc. It's just something that I need to make time for! This collection is just totally cool to me! It's adorable and fun, but would we expect anything less from Cosmo Cricket!?!

I love this set!!! It takes me back to when I used to watch my Mom cut out patterns for me and my twin sister. She would make our dresses and all kinds of cute little outfits. Good days!!

OH yeah. I'm in love with this collection.

When my brother was 4 & I was 2, my mom was hospitalized for six weeks with preterm labor for my younger brother. While she was there, she hand-stitched a Raggedy Ann & Andy doll for us. I still have such a love for anything hand sewn.... and anything "Raggedy". :)

I just got a sewing machine for Christmas so I would love to incorporate a lot of sewing with these gorgeous papers!

I remember my mother sewing just about anything we asked her to. I have a sewing maching now, I just wish I had the skills that she had! Maybe someday...

I found this fabulous blog thanks to one of my friends!

Love all the info you privide! I took peak at the past challenges, and they are so fun!
Can't wait to play with you all!

I also have memories of my mom making our clothes. one year she was the oficial uniform maker for my elementary school. I remember after finishing my homework, I helped her with the buttons and buttonholes (yes, her machine didn't make buttonholes). it was a lot of work, but everyone in the famly help.

I love, love, love the Material Girl line! It takes me right, straight to my grandmother's old Singer sewing machine and the days she would (ever so patiently) let me push that huge plate pedal back and forth so that she could stitch something up. It also gives me a boot to my machine to get me working on quilts for all my friends who are about to have babies!

Miwa said...

The best gift my mother ever gave me was professional sewing lessons when I was a teenager. Being able to sew cute outfits and Halloween costumes for my children has been great fun! Now, if only I had time to sew things for myself again... but I think I'd rather scrap!

paradise45 said...

I too learned to sew from my mom. Now it's funny because she would sit me down for hours in front of her machine and have me stitching back and forth, making squares, and many other random stitch patterns. I thought she was the most advanced sewer ever with all these drills. After I passed them all, I started making clothes for myself and my dolls. To this day I still sew for myself. One day I decided to ask my mom if she remembered the hours of the sewing drills that she put me through. She certainly did and confessed that she didn't have a clue as to how to sew on her machine but thought I needed to be proficient at it. We still laugh when I bring it up. I have traded sewing machines 5 times since I first learned how to sew. Thanks mom, I really do know how to sew, both with and without patterns and instructions!

This paper is awesome; it brings back so many memories.

I miss my handsewn flannel jammies. they had a special warmth to them. There always was special nightgown at christmas - my grandma would match the plaid on the seems so that you could not even tell. Thanks for the warm wonderful Christmas memories.

Love love love the Material Girl line. I too grew up surrounded by women who sewed. I remember watching my older sister being taught by our mother. I was so anxious to be old enough to be the one to learn!

mustangkayla said...

Are you sure you weren't talking about my childhood? Down to the piano recitals and school teacher mom? lol...It brings back many of the same memories. We took a vacation one time and my mom made me and her matching out fits and my dad and brother matching shirts....so so so embarrassing!

When my family came over from Italy, they opened a couple of Tailor Shops and a Dry Cleaner's. I learned to sew at the knee of my Nonna. She made all of our clothes and all of hers, my dad's, his brother's and her husband's. She also made clothes for my mom and taught her to sew. It's a large part of my background, and I would LOVE to have these papers to commemorate these memories!

My mother used to make me the most amazing clothes, modifying the patterns to look just the way I wanted. I can sew, but didn't enherit her amazing talent.

Niki Estes said...

This is one of my absolute favorite new lines! I love the patterns! I'm not a big sewer with cloth, but I love to add stitching to my cards.

Jenn said...

This line as fab colors and designs. My mom was NOT a seamstress. If anything else you would give her some pans to fix the button and then never see them again! LOL I wish I knew how to sew though.

TracyJ said...

I so love this line. We could not wear pants to school, so I had lots of nice dresses, made with fabric from the remnant/sale section. After 8th grade the school changed it's policy and we could wear jeans (halleluha). But she made all but one of my formals.

some kind of wonderful said...

this is one of my fav collections from them!! i just love it!

Love the new sewing theme! I started sewing doll clothes in grade school with a tiny machine (which I still have)and now of course a newer model. My grandmother was a great inspiration and showed me a lot of clothes that she made and handmade embroidery lace trims and hankies.

Lisa C. said...

Yes, I too wore a lot of handmade clothes that my mom loving made for me. But the most fun was helping my mom make so many cool Barbie clothes!! Nice memories! I love this line:)

Amy said...

Yes, this line reminds me of my grandmother and even my mom at times with their sewing machines at the kitchen table making clothes, costumes and crafts. I would accompany my grandmother to local craft fairs to help her sell her beautiful crafted items. My mother usually made our Halloween costumes every year. I regularly pull out my own sewing machine to sew on my paper crafts, but on occasion, I have made clothes for my children as well as some maternity items for myself. Such a fun nostalgic line!! Thanks for sharing!!

I have those same memories of having hand sewn clothing as a child... even into college! I come from a family of seamstresses so it seemed natural to get my degree in Clothing and Textiles. I've put those simple skills into my cardmaking and scrapbooking. I would love to win this sweet Cosmo Cricket line!

My mother made all my clothes when i was growing up, too. And she gave me the gift, as well--I feel like I've been sewing all my life.

BDJ said...

Oh, this collection reminds me of my mom. She tried to teach me to sew, but it didn't take. So she makes my childrens halloween costumes every year. She's amazing!

My mom made a little stuff growing up. Now at 28, I appreciate it much more than I did the matching dresses for sister and I back then. Plus since i now sew a bit too, I see how much time she put into every detail. I wish I still had every piece she ever made.

I really do adore this line for those reason and think about her everytime I see it. I can't wait to scrap pics of her creations on it eventually!!!

I love this collection, it reminds me of sewing with my grandma when I was little. I was so proud that it was my "job" to thread the needles!

Oh my this is my life sewing. I had my own sewing machine when I was 9. I did the whole 4-H and make it with wool contest and went on to school to be a alteration specialist and have had my own business for over 28 years now. I love these papers and will have to buy them and use them not just hoard them!
Thanks for sharing.

My mom also used to make my clothes until I was around 8 or 9...mostly just the summer ones...remember kool-ots (sp?) the one piece things that tied at the shoulders? Loved those! I have made a few things but nothing that I would ever wear out of the house you know! lol This is a fab line! Brings back some great memories of times gone by!

I LOVE this new line from Cosmo Cricket...super cute! I have a little Janome Sew Mini sewing machine that I use to create small sewing projects like little bags...that kind of thing. I'd love to get a bigger one eventually so I can expand a bit more on the projects I can make. I learnt to sew at school...how quaint!

Kim said...

WOW! Thanks for the walk down memory lane! I can also remember looking through the pattern books and choosing just the right material! My Mom made all my clothes as well, and of course that's where I learned to sew. Material girl would be just AWESOME to have to record those memories! Thanks for the chance to win.

I was born in 49 and there was no Target or Walmart. My dad always had a goood job and was in the Navy as well, but for everyone money was tight and there were three of us girls and my mom. My mom sewed and my mammaw made each of us three dresses as well. I longed for pants as we were not allowed to wear them, and until college the only pants set I ever got was from my great aunt on my dad's side. I started sewing at age 4 and was making my own clothes by 7th grade. I made almsost all my clothes for college and made my wedding dress and my daughters. This is indeed a beautiful collection of papers, one I am sure we will have fun with!

My mom used to sell the clothing she made at a family-owned boutique. Most of her business was custom ordered smocked dresses for little girls and mother-daughter coordinating combos.

It reminds me of this photo of my mom and me when I was just a baby. We had on matching dresses that she had made for us, and they were actually very cute. She made them each appropriate for who was wearing them. Hmmm....I wonder where that photo is? Such a super cute line...I really love the chipboard!

My grandmother made most of my clothes when I was little and my Mom had the foresight to save them for my daughter. She now wears the same clothes I did-- which will make for some darling comparison spreads on this fab paper!!!

I LOVE this sewing line! I have always LOVED sewing, but haven't had a sewing machine. My mom had one when I was living at home, and I was able to sew a quilt and some other things. I even took home-ec in high school and made an apron and lots of otehr goodies!
I have recently wanted to get back into sewing, even making children's clothing. I am thinking about investing in a sewing machine, and would love this collection to scrapbook my process!
Thanks for the chance to win!!

Love this new line of PP, and like you, my mom sewed all of my clothing too. I loved/hated it. I always had original clothes, but as I grew older, I didn't have the "Guess", "Polo", or "Izod" emblem on my clothes, which I wanted, of course! Now, my mom still sews- curtains for my home, clothes for my 3 little ones- and I LOVE it! So happy that HANDMADE is cool again!

Ah the simplicity of a crafting child! This line takes me there. And I have some great photos of my 6 year old on her Hello Kitty sewing machine that would go PERFECTLY with these!

Junior High is where this takes me. That is when I made my first skirt in home ec. class. My teacher was a real detailed and stickler on sewing and being perfect for the pattern. I made a few mistakes, but covered them well so I thought. She found them anyway and gave me a "C" and told me that I was not good at sewing. Ha ha ha, but now I create my own patterns and sew many many different things.

Natalie said...

I like this line. I wish I was better at sewing. It's always on my SOMEDAY List. Sometimes, it seems as though, "nowadays" that it's not any less expensive to make it yourself. It's a shame because I think it's making sewing a lost art. Which makes me really glad that so many of the latest scrapbooking trends and styles have encouraged sewing as well. :)

Kim M said...

I love this line, it reminds me of growing up and watching my mom at the sewing machine. She would make ALL my clothes and believe it or not, I loved them and wore them proudly.

I absolutely LOVE this collection. It reminds me of my grandma. She was my crafting inspiration - she made ceramics (embellishing them with lace and flowers), stuffed bunny rabbit dolls with gorgeous outfits, and so much more. She was an incredibly talented woman and I miss sitting in her studio helping her paint or add "blush" to a doll's cheeks.

I learned to sew at a young age and although I am no seamstress I can sew. I should actually sew more often. When I first saw this line I actually didn't even think of sewing. I thought of my daughters first haircut. The girly colors and the scissors. In fact I would love to do a layout of her first haircut with this line. I love Cosmo Cricket!!!

I have always had a love affair with material and sewing. Since I was a little girl walking through the fabric store with my mom touching each and every fabric looking for just the right feel. I am now teaching my daughter to sew, and she is a little natural. Can't wait to scrapbook some of the photos from her lessons. This collection inspires me to get busy!
