You Will Not Last 'Til Dawn: Happy Halloween from Cath!

Happy Halloween, friends! I've got a little something that I'm super excited to share with you today!

I first created this Halloween scene in my kitchen window after I'd quit teaching middle school English, French, and creative writing, 10 years ago. My husband, Mark, was out-of-town for a week and I apparently needed a serious bulletin board fix. Armed with an Xacto knife, some black poster board, construction paper, tissue paper, and a glue stick, I worked into the wee hours of many mornings to create a tradition that has become one of our favorite ways to celebrate Halloween, year after year.

You Will Not Last 'til Dawn by Cath Edvalson

At Halloween, the time is keen to turn shadow into light:

The graveyard speaks, the attic creaks, as twilight leans on night:

The twisted fence wards off suspense as though it could contain:

The threats within, above the din, beneath the quaint refrain:

The gravestones gray hide such decay that demons flee in fright:

As witches cry beyond the sky, their work to hasten blight:

Beware the trees they yearn to seize your breath until it's gone:

For in this space, this dangerous place you will not last 'til dawn:

Happy Halloween from my house to yours! See you on Moxie Monday with one of my top five collections from CHA Summer and a brand new blog banner!

Trick or treat,

~Cath

Yup 2nd comment. Last night just before I fell asleep I was struck by a vision for next year's Halloween decorations. I was so inspired by your silhouettes I decided we're going to make large ones out of plywood to use outdoors. Thank you so very very much!
